My buy out is $1K less than NADA trade-in and $4K less than NADA private party. If Carmax or whoever will pay me more than my buy-out can I make money, or will I have to pay tax on the sale only to sell the car to Carmax the next day and lose money?

In other words, do I have to pay tax title and doc fees on a car that I am immediately selling?

You need to work out the numbers before you decide.

 

I don't know about your state, but in California you would have to pay sales tax on the lease buy out before you could transfer title to Carmax or resell the car.
