I know there's been some discussion touching on this subject, but I would like to get your opinions on this. I used to own an '07 M35x and loved the car, but unfortunately had to sell.

My dilemma is this: I am back in the Infiniti market and am looking at the G35 series cars and actually do like the coupe, but have to consider the New England winters, so the G35x make more sense. My price range is not much more than $18K. I have just spotted an '07 G35x with approx. 70,000 miles offered at $18,300. I also have my eyes on an '06 G35x with approx. 34,000 miles offered at 17,900.

I understand the importance of maintenance, condition of the car and the type of miles driven.....but if both cars are equal in this regard, does it make more sense to go after the '07 or the '06. I do like the look of the newer sedan. Any advice would be greatly appreciated...They are both great looking cars. (neither has navigation) Thank you for your opinions..

 

Well, given your situation, my first two questions would be:

1) How many miles are you planning on driving the car yearly?
2) How long do you plan on keeping it?

The reasons being, these can affect the car's residual value.

For only one year difference in model year, the mileage is substantially different, and for good or bad, this greatly affects resale value.

If you drive A LOT (to the point the car will have well over 100K miles), it can make a difference. It's a public perception thing. Many people (particularly those less familiar with foreign--and more precisely, Japanese--cars), think that if I car has over 100K it's "well worn" and 200K may as well be the death sentence. Personally, I laugh at this as I've owned several imports (mostly hondas and toyotas) that have nearly 300K or more miles and still run very well. But when SELLING a car, you have to consider your target buyer.

Obviously, the '07 has been driven more, but are they more highway miles or hard city driving? Personally, (if there was a sure fire way to know) I'd pick a car w/ 70K all hwy miles vs. a 30K mile, hard city-driven car any day of the week.

Still, if resale value is your goal, everything in the car biz is mileage mileage mileage, so the '06 will likely be worth more in the end. Plus, the white is much sexier than boring old grey, IMHO

My vote? I'd pick the one with a 6MT, as I've driven both and the manuals are WAY more fun to drive.
Oh wait, there's both autotragic A/T's, as I don't believe the X models were ever offered in a M/T.

Great questions I forgot to address, I probably will put on about 10K on mileage per year. I would think I would have the car for at least three years if all goes well. You're right, the white is hot. Thanks very much for your comments.

 

I'd get the white 06. Half the miles, and only one year older.

 

Tough choice. New body style with twice the miles or old body style with half the miles. Both engines "G35" are pretty much the same. It's a coin flip for me. But if I have to pick one, probably go with the one with the less miles.

 

Neither of them have a warranty anymore most likely. I'd go with the 07. The interior updates and the improved headlights are well worth the extra miles. I bought my car with 20k miles on it, and it has 80k now and it really drives the same as the day I got it. Make sure the interior of that 07 doesn't have the peeling steering wheel and door pulls so many people complain about.

you're right jorge, not sure if Palm Beach area vehicles may be a bit less expensive than the Boston area, as the price I quote is their initial price. I would like to get them out of the 18K range. Same with the '06, they got to move down some.

I have 06 and I'd prbbly get 07 just for the HR motor.
But look for something under 70k

Thanks for asking...nothing new to report. I still am looking. The '07 sold a few days after the post and the '06 sold the day I went to look at it. Now it's mainly between 05's and 06's. I test drove an '05 G35X, white, 59K, yesterday, but it seemed to have some issues and I could tell it hadn't been maintained very well. All and all, trying to take my time. I hope all is well...

 

Please take your time and don't jump the gun. The G35x is a little better in the compression rod / bushing department but there is still common issues to look for. I would make sure to get the engine checked out and have some sort of maintenance history since most vehicles will not have a warranty. Check the driver seat to make sure the frame is not worn or broken and rocking. Check the window motor by raising and lowering the windows a bunch of times over a period of time. Check the A/C controls to make sure they are no shorting out or going bad. I am sure I am missing things but take your time and find the right vehicle and more importantly at the right price.
