Newbie looking to purchase an '05-06 Sedan w/ Sport package

Hey Guys,

I’m new to the board and have been lurking and reading posts for a couple weeks now.
I am in the market for an ’05-06 Sedan w/ RWD & the Sport package. I’m leaning towards a 6MT, although I have not driven an Auto w/ the sport package. I’m actually not sure how to verify if the cars I have seen online have that package. If they have the 18’ wheels does that automatically mean they have the Sport package?

I found a sedan that I like which has the 6MT and 74k miles on it for a very good price. I test drove it yesterday and it drove great, however... The VDC Off, Slip and brake lights all came on when I was making a turn and nailed the gas. The back-end stepped out (as I was hoping) and then all 3 lights lit up. The car still drove as normal after that, but I was very concerned since I didn't think those lights were supposed to stay on. I shut the car off at the dealer and the lights disappeared so I had to go back out. I was able to make the lights come back on after taking a couple of turns and applying full throttle.

After reading many threads on here I’m hoping the fluid is just a little low as the rear pads did look about half worn. They are sending the car to an Infinity dealer since they could not find anything wrong with the car. I’m hoping they find something and take care of this. Maybe install new pads and/or add fluid.

My one other concern is that the clutch did not seem to grab to hard in 2nd gear. It’s been a while since I have driven a manual so it may have been partially me letting the clutch out too slow. I just expected a little more grab when winding out 1st gear and quickly shifting to 2nd. Can anyone tell me if it is normal or describe if the G35 should grab 2nd gear harder? Is there any way I can test the clutch to try to figure out if it’s still has plenty of grab? Does anyone know the average life of the G’s clutch? I know it varies due to driving habits, and that some go out at 50k miles and others get 175k out of them, but in general do they usually last 75-80k miles, 100k, 150k, etc.?

Any comments on my above questions and/or suggestions about a Newbie looking to purchase a Sport packaged G35 sedan would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
-T

Clutch life depends on the driver. Did they rev to 7k rpms every stop light or did they baby her at 2500rpm. If you want to test the grab, the only way I can think of right is by turn the vdc off first, go to a safe open area put her in 1st gear, hold the clutch down, rev it to about 2k rpms and drop the clutch and slam the gas at the same time. If your clutch is good, your car will do a mini burn out and catapult you into the next gear. If your clutch is bad, and you do that, your rpms will shoot through the roof and your car wont go anywhere. The key part here is paying attention to the rpm needle, the rpms should match what the car is doing.

I dont know what to tell you about the VDC, it could be numerous things.

Thanks Gsouske35. I will try that if I go back down to look at the car again before buying it.
Unfortunately the car is ~60 miles from my house so it's over an hours drive. I'm hoping to take my wife down to see it tomorrow night, but she really doesn't want to spend the money on it right now. I'm tired of only driving my Frontier and really miss driving a car!
I tried to putting the E-brake on and letting the clutch out in 1st, but the brake didn't hold at all.

Can anyone also give me an idea of any maintenance I should perform on a G w/ 74k miles since I have no idea what or if any maintenance has been completed? Also, what is the avg. cost of this maintenance? I can do a few things myself, but don't have extensive experience working on cars.

The dealer sent the car to an Infinity dealer and they said it was due to low brake fluid so they topped it off. I'm going back tonight with my wife to look at the car again. I'm ~90% sure I'm going to buy it, but my wife is around 10% sure so together we're at about 11% (since as the woman her opinion is worth 99% of "OUR" decision ). Hopefully driving it will change her mind and I'll have an hour on the way there to bombard her facts on why we should buy it.

Any last words of wisdom or things to look at closely before buying a G? This may be on this site somewhere, but I have not yet found it. If anyone could post a link I would appreciate it!

Thanks,
-T

My real last minute advice? Go lease a brand new 2012 G37 sedan for 439/month for 39 months with $0 down.

Well, the wife drove it last night and liked it so she gave me the nod. I am the new owner of a Diamond Graphite 2005 G35 Sedan 6MT! The 70 mile drive home was nice, although it was close to midnight by the time we made it home. Cruise was set at 75 most of the way home, but the last couple miles I had to take her up for a quick touch of triple digits. I think I'm going to like driving this car!

Gsouske35- I'm not a lease type of guy. If I'm paying that much money I want to own something at the end. Assuming $3k down that lease is about 60% more than I'm paying for my '05.

Ah another fellow 6mt sedan owner. Congrats on your purchase! Keep an eye on the clutch though, many 6mt's usually have a problem with the clutch slave cylinder.

Welcome to the G community! Congrats on the 6mt. Any plans for her? How do you like driving it so far?

Hey guys, thanks for the warm welcome.
So far I love driving the G. I am very surprised though, how much the VDC steps in. Whenever I get on it while turning even slightly I feel the VDC limiting the throttle. Yesterday I turned the VDC off for a short drive. I took off from a stop sign and turned left. I was heavy on the throttle and the car hooked up and took off. The road was a little bumpy so I felt the tires spin a little and the back slid just a little, but I took off faster while turning than ever before. I just wish that the VDC system gave us a little more leeway before stepping in.

I called the dealer and they want $680 to complete a 60k mile service which includes changing all the fluids, filters, setting the valves, etc. I think I will have this done over the next couple months since I don’t know much about the maintenance history. The car has 74.5k on it and the interior and exterior is in great shape so I would have to assume the previous owner did keep the maintenance up too.
1SlowSedan- Can you elaborate on the clutch slave cylinder issue? I have only redlined my car once on the 1-2 shift and the clutch did slip a little. It has me a little concerned, but I usually shift between 3-4k and never feel any slip so hopefully my clutch will be ok until at least 100k miles.

My plans for “Fiona” are: First update the maintenance, then I may have her tinted. Beyond that I will likely only mod stuff as things wear out. I’ve started looking around at brake packages, intakes, sway bars, and of course clutches so some of those will likely be my first few mods. I’m sure I’ll be pining the board for suggestions/help/best brands/etc.

Hopefully this link to my album works, but I’ll post a couple pics below also.
