Hey everyone,
new[b] member here, looking for some advice on what I should do with my 2005 G35 sedan, it has the premium package and 118k miles. I bought it in October with 113k, the first owner, up until 2014, took very good care of it, but there is no service record after that.
It currently doesn’t run, it will turn over maybe then shut off. It needs a new engine..7-8 weeks ago I somehow managed to run this piece of strip wood flooring over on the freeway (I have no idea how because I never saw it or felt it) and it got lodged right in the sweet spot of my radiator and I had no idea I was driving with a piece of wood sticking out from my car. But long story short I probably if I had to guess drove it for a couple miles during rush hour traffic before it completely broke down. There wasn’t any smoke by the time it happened, and the engine temp only went up the last minute or so before I had to stop, and luckily made it off the freeway and neutral bombed into a parking lot.
replaced the radiator, condenser, thermostat, and shroud and the Infiniti dealership told me they didn’t see any damage that was caused by any overheating. But they also didn’t - and I wouldn’t expect them to - inspect and strip the engine down to check the heads if they were cracked or the head gasket, and whatever else would be damaged by overheating the engine. It was running perfectly fine since then but two weeks ago it ran out of coolant and the dealership told me after they inspected it that it had a blown head gasket and coolant went back into the engine. They quoted me 7k for a new engine, and sad they could knock some labor off and get it down to around slightly over 6k.
I bought a new car instead with that money. So my plan was to part it out and sell them over the next few months hopefully getting at the end of it all 6k-8k. I don’t know what kind of wheels they are, but one of the previous two owners, probably the first one, put a spoiler and bumper kit, and Megan racing suspension/lowering springs on it.
Am I on the right track and is it worth it to disassemble and sell the parts or should I sell it as is for however much I can get for it? When I looked at new cars the dealership said they’d give me 2000 in the trade in which surprisingly was way over what I thought considering it doesn’t run. So I would try to sell it privately for maybe 1500 more than that..?
a new engine on eBay is 1500-2500 and then + labor of course.
tl;dr
replaced the radiator two months ago, ran out of coolant two weeks ago, blown head gasket, and needs a new engine. Should I part it out or sell it as is? Or say screw if and take it to a salvage yard? I would take the wheels off before I did that last one though. It has Megan racing suspension/lowering springs.
First thing I would do is a leakdown and compression test to see HOW BAD the HG blew, if it's just barely pushed you can always try a bottle of head gasket repair. A running vehicle will always be significantly more valuable, just be honest with the new buyer about what happened.
If you have the time and space to do a part out you'll probably end up making more money over the course of the 6mo+ it will take to offload all the valuables, but if you can sell the entire car as-is not running for $2k that's actually a pretty fair price.
Is it a 5AT or 6MT? If it's a 6MT you're better off parting out since even the blown rev-up engine would be worth $500 and the CD009 another $500, plus the VLSD for another $250 and so on. 2005-2007 6MT stuff sells pretty well.
