Gas? Oil? Maintenance?
Gas? Oil? Maintenance?
I'm planning on purchasing a new coupe in a couple of weeks and I've got a few questions:
1) What type of gas do you use? I've heard quite a few times that "premium", high octane gas isn't what it's cracked up to be. Is it worth it to spend the extra money on the 91/93 stuff?
2) I've read a few discussion saying it's a smart idea to use normal oil for the first 10-15K miles, and then switch to synthetics, due to it helping break the engine in a little better. Does this make sense? Or should I just stick with Synthetic stuff?
3) How often do you change your oil? 3k? 5k? 7k? What does Nissan/Infiniti recommend?
4) Any point in using any type of additives, or is that yet another way to steal my money?
5) Any other maintenance recommendations?
I bought a 97 accord in 98 and have been driving it ever since. I haven't exactly treated it well, and considering how much I'm dropping on the G, I'd like to make sure it gets baby'd

2) It's your choice, I just switched over to synthetic at 25k. There is nothing wrong with sticking with regular oil. Some people do it at first, some wait.
3) I changed my oil at 3700 miles with regular oil but plan on changing it at 5000 since I switched to synthetic.
4) I don't believe in additives and I dont think even Infiniti recommends them in the service manual either.
5) Follow the the maintenance schule inside the owners manual.
My only word of advice, you pay for what you get so don't be cheap on maintaining your car. Do things right and take your time. I've had a few project cars and lets just say ya pay for what ya get. Also if you just keep up with maintaining your car, your car should last for quite some time.
Good luck!
1) The coupe is made to run on High octane for the better or the worse. Service manuals suggest the car should only be run on lower octane in emergencies and it advices to keep the car at lower rpms.
There is a fixed cost of about $0.20 a gallon more for premium, when you run the difference over a year you will probably find it will only cost you $100-300 (depending on how much u drive); well under the cost of a set of premium tires or brakes. Its an expensive car, you have to expect to pay more for some things.

1. Here in Cali, we're regulared to 91 octane. So to answer your question about using 91, it's not a prob. Now going down to 89, ehh...use your own judgement. You have a V6, not a 4-banger. Your engine needs that extra boost of octane to keep in good shape. Other thing...it's only a dime extra from 89-91. Overall extra costs, $1.60 +/-.
2. With the G', I'll never change the oil myself only for warranty reasons. Never know when the dealer will dick you over. But on my previous cars, always used synthetic.
3. Nissian recommends what...3500, 7000, u kno...pretty much increments of 3500 miles or every 3 months. If you go to the dealer at 7000 miles, don't let them rip you off because they do the same work as the 3500 mile service.
4. Don't believe in them...your G' is a high performance ryde to begin with. You want an extra boost, turbo it.
5. Follow your dealers' recommendations
1. Regardless what other people say. The manufacturer says to use 91, so you better use 91 if you want to keep your warranty. The difference is only something like 3 dollars a tank or something like that, so I think you can afford that.
2. I just used full synthetic since the first oil change. I also do all my own maintenence. Don't worry about the dealer trying to screw you over. (Acura dealer already tried that on my old TL with the tranny). They don't have a leg to stand on, because the warranty disclaimer says to follow your owners manual. Owners manual says to refer to the maintenance guide. Maintenence guide just "recommends" two different intervals. Each item in the interval says "Should" or "recommended". "Should" and "Recommended" have different legal meanings than "Must" and "mandatory". Long story short. Failure to do these things cannot void your warranty, because it does not violate the terms of the warranty, and is not a condition explicitely specified in the disclaimer. Acura re-instated my warranty, and replaced my tranny free of charge. They tried to say that because I didn't have the dealer do the service my warranty was void. On top of everything I mentioned, the maintenece guide also only "recommends" that you have your car serviced through the dealer. Though I'm not suggesting you not perform regular maintenence
3. Even though I use synthetic, I still change my oil according to the maintenence computer. Usually 3500-4000 miles. Since I do my own oil changes anyways, the cost of an oil change amortized over 4000 miles is pretty trivial.
4. Most additives are just snake oil. I don't know about Infiniti, but on my other GM car, the manual actually says the only approved additive is Techron. The use of any other additive will void your warranty. So as such, the only additive I use on any of my cars is a bottle of Techron every oil change.
5. Not really.

I never filled any of my cars with that 89 octane crap they sell at gas stations... that's for the rentals!
I'm also happy I don't live in Cali without 93 octane.
On a nice car like this if you could, I would go with synthetic.
The maintanence price on this car is a little high, you gotta admit.

, I take G to same place for oil change as my other cars I've own before, so I dont see why G's maintanece would be any higher either. Just because G might cost bit more than other cars doesnt means it need more than what manual suggests, like using synthetic or K/N filters.
