Questions about G35 Coupe 6mt.

The G35 has caught my eye ever since it was born. The exhaust note, the design, the luxurious interior, the engine... ahh is this what love feels like? Let me introduce myself, my name is Steve and I am new to this forum. I'm a part time mechanic and technician so I know a little-a lot about cars. Well the main reason why I'm posting this tread is because I'm going to buy a new car within a couple of months. The G35 coupe 6mt has been on my mind, but I am concerned about the simple "problems" Infiniti has. I know from a hands on experience that Infiniti engines are not as reliable as their leading competitions. I am not talking bad about anyones car here, because I too wan't to own a G35 as well. I'm just concerned about the engine. Do you guys think the car can last 10-15+ years with excellent care? By "lasting" I mean, the engine would not give me ANY problems what so ever? AND, is there any other problems the G35 has under the hood? If anyone with knowledge about cars, could answer these simple questions I would greatly appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Steve

of all the complaints i've ever read about the G35 on this forum, i have yet to read one about the engine. in fact, the VQ35 engine has been rated one of the 10 best in the world by Ward's Automotive for 12 years in a row.

http://subscribers.wardsauto.com/Mic...=1004&srtype=1

the engine is used in multiple nissan/infiniti platforms, revealing its versatility and reliability.

no, the problems you'll find people listing about the G35 are things like interior rattling, or grinding of the gearbox on the 6MT, uncomfortable seats that press into your leg (although i personally love the seats), the awful seat belt that cuts into your neck (this has been somewhat resolved in the 06 models), cheap plasticy interior materials (mainly in pre-05 models), sub-par gas mileage, etc.

the engine, however, is great.

Thanks a lot for the website, I am about to read it. I was just concerned because I want to keep this car for a very long time, and hopefully turn it into a classic. (i know i know) People who complain about the small things do not know much about cars , you know. It all matters about what happends under the hood. Cmon now... Well thanks again for your help, I hope this article helps me decide whether to buy the car or not.

no worries. best of luck with the purchase. if you do decide to go with the G, i know you won't regret it. just keep in mind that the next generation g35 is coming out soon (the new sedan will be in production this November, with the new coupe following in the Spring of '07). you might want to wait, or risk having a car that gets outdated within a year.

if you do a forum search on "coupe concept," you'll see plenty of threads on the next G coupe, with pictures from the recent auto shows.

AH, Now I'm not so sure at all! The word "concept" is deceiving! I believe that the 2007 model will not be modified at all! Maybe a new cup holder?

Talking Read me

The VQ engines (and a few other things) saved Nissan from near disaster. In the 1990’s there was nothing for Nissan to go on. No exciting products, no good designs, and most importantly a really bad reputation of reliability compared to Toyota & Honda. In order to change the direction of the company they hired a new CEO (some French guy) and invested a lot of money in developing the new VQ 3.5 engine. After they finished the new VQ they stuck it in everything they could (mostly to save money). If you buy a Nissan product today there is a very good chance you will get some variation of this motor; everything from entry sedans to minivans to trucks to premier sport cars. In short it is the clowning achievement of Nissan. If you decide on the G you will have the best version of this engine as they tuned it for maximum horsepower at the most reliable level. Don’t worry about the engine, worry about the transmission (fixed in later productions) and qwerty design issues like ugly instrument clusters and cheap carpeting and then remind yourself if you want anything better (in it’s class) you will have to spend an extra 10 grand and give up some horses.

Thanks a lot, I enjoyed reading your opinion. Hopefully I can actually stop pondering and get the damn car!

the engine, however, is great.

My 2004 has no issues with the seat belt, no 6MT problems, love the seats, and yes, while it really only holds one cup, the stock brakes (Brembos) are looking like another 10k+ before pads, have 24k to date. Stock rubber Michelin PS's actually have 15k+ miles, the remainder on my Pirelli SnowSport 240's.

This is a great car, no regrets. Took delivery on 12/31/2003. Service cost to date about $350 total, not counting that I bought a set of wheels and tires for snows...and I do my own oil changes after the first $50 dealer change (no thanks!)

The engine pulled 243 whp on a Dynojet dyno stock with no mods other than a K&N drop-in filter. Dynojets with rear wheels off (unlike roller dynos) in general are more accurate and tend to run lower numbers (i.e. more realistic). BTW, that's 1 hp difference or margin of error within the same numbers my 350Z pulled...torque was up there, too, with 80-90% available practically off idle (2000-2500 rpm about 200 ft-lbs), this is a great engine.

Gas mileage has been excellent, 18-20 normal mix, 26 hwy. I have friend with a G35 Sedan AWD, his is 18 pretty much everywhere. The 6 MT has a killer top gear if you use it, hwy numbers are very, very good.

Steve

the VQ motor is a great motor. wheather it is the 3.0 or the 3.5. i know for f/i the 3.0 is the choice. the 3.5 is smooth, not as smooth as an inline 6 but smooth none the less.
