TTC Strike (Toronto)

Someone steals a car, causes monetary suffering and time to an individual = crime + punishment

Elected official unfairly award a contract to a company, wasting tax payers money = crime + punishment

Hooker sells her body to survive = crime

Driver is aught speeding 11 over in a 50, fines, insurance goes up, time spent in court = crime and fine

A union goes on an illegal strike -->

- hurts those most in need of public transportation (lesser income, welfare, those with public daycare, etc)
- costs businesses big and small millions of $$$ in productivity loss (which in turn has a huge affect on log term cash flow, competitiveness in the world's market, I could go one forever)
- inflicts more pain and suffering on the disabled that rely on the TTC for their special needs transportation
- Loss to individuals that do not have an accommodating work environment, many will not get paid for hours missed at work
- increased use of cars, more pollution and traffic
- less confidence in the TTC, long term ridership goes down, increased fair pricing for those that NEED the TTC, rinse and repeat this sentence
- tourists visiting Toronto this week (mainly US citizens) get a great view into how Toronto is, tourism both short term and long term is affected, money lost again

= what does that equal in $$$....millions
= will anyone in that Union be charged with any sort of fine, penalty or jail time...NOPE
= will the union ultimately get what they what (or some degree of it), yup

Unions can kiss my a$$... they served a purpose in the industrial age and no doubt was a pillar of how we have arrived into the 20th century.

Shame on those involved in today's strike

Why totally blame the workers? What about the management team that ALLOWED this to happen by poor contract negotiations? Sometimes it's far to easy to blame the front line workers, when you dont' know the complete issues on both sides. I'm thinking the contract negotiations failed and this is the unions last resort to obtain a fair contract for it's workers.

From what I can gather this illegal strike was not expected by anyone. There was a process in place and they didnt follow.

Moreover, the surprise to the general public was also the most unfair aspect of this strike. At the bare minimum there should have been notice to the public so that arrangements could be made (as best as each person could).

This illegal strike is very simple: holding the public hostage...pure and simple. We can argue over the issues, over the process, etc... but you can not argue that the people that rely on this service the most are being hurt. The ones the rely on it the most also have the most to loose.

I could not care as much on the effects on big business, but for the less "well off" people of our community do not deserve this.

People forget about their place in this world.... they forget about how fortunate the majority of Canadians are in relation to both industrialized and developing countries (I am not excluded from this comment).

There are so many that are willing to work... when did working hard become a negotiation? When did sacrifice become not an option? When did the opportunity to have a job become a right?

While I was getting ready for work today I was listening to The Edge. A commuter on the the highway called into the show.

A physically disabled person in a motorized wheel chair was on the HIGHWAY trying to get to where he needed to. ON THE HIGHWAY IN THE HEAT!!!!! IN TRAFFIC. He was getting stuck on various things that you can imagine are on the highway and not designed for pedestrian traffic.

The person could not talk and had to use a tele-typer to communcate to this caller that he was lost and needed help.

WTF... this is why I am in the mood that I am.

Those union workers should put themselves into this disabled person's shoes.

I'll stop now.

agreed. Illegal strikes are no way to negotiate.

In a place like GTA, an already bad situation would be made virtually impossible.

The sad thing is it's stuff like this that turns Toronto into a pit of hateful jerks. Sometimes I kind of forget that outside the city people are not total a-holes.

Transit strike and an illegal one with no notice.

What are these people thinking and to what end will they go to? They are looking to receive the kind of security and benefits that virtually no one has today.

i fail to see how this sudden and illegal strike did anything other than to show everyone that the TTC Union will do whatever they want to get whatever they want...not exactly the best of face to put forward.

Stiff penalties and heavy fines may make the organizers think twice about that again, but for some, damage has already been done ... :
Some patients were waiting for rides to hospitals for treatments and had to cancel due to affordability of alternate tansport issues. For them it was a life and death situation.... unforgivable

i think most company's that are unionized just expect the strike to happen regardless... and the effort to make a proper compromise is never addressed to begin with. i've gotten so used to the teacher strikes each year... it almost feels weird when i don't hear of one in the paper. they're like an annual company bbq. sad but true.

Kinnear should go to jail. This is totally unfair to the people who NEED public transit.

I think we are all in agreement here: The Better Way is in our G's or M's.
