I ordered my father these two books from Amazon.ca tonight. They look pretty good and I think they may come in handy for him. It's a start at least.

Not sure if you guys have the big "Black Friday" After Thankgiving Sales in Canada, but many retailers have a few Garmins for a great price. It still could be more than you were wanting to spend though.

LOL, Tom. That's why I said "my family"......
I've not had CAA since the 90's..... , but it is great, and even better than the roadside assistance from the manuafacturers.....
