I just read in the Halifax's Chronicle Herald that they will be implementing a smoking ban in all public indoor places starting Dec 1st. I didn't realize that NS still allowed smoking in bars, restaurants, etc. That is great news for you Deane.

New Brunswick passed this law over two years ago now and I LOVE IT. You can actually go have a nice supper with your wife and not have to worry about breathing cigarette smoke and coming home smelling like an ashtray. Glad to see NS passing this bylaw.

 

Btw, do most other Provinces have this same bylaw implemented?

 

It's taken a while here Shane.
It's been in effect on a municipal level for quite a while. (some areas yes others no)
Provincially, Ontario's ban came into force May 31, 2006.

 

Washington state has a smoking ban in all public indoor places and also 20 or 25 feet away from any door or window something like that

 

Ontario implemented a similar law this spring. The City of Ottawa has had a bylaw since 2001.

I always thought that having a smoking section in a restaurant was like having a peeing section in a pool.
(It's a joke people, I'm not an antismoking ****)

I always thought that most smoking sections were rather ridiculous. I have found myself in several occasions in the past sitting in a non-smoking section only to have the smoking section less than 10 feet from me. Yeah, like the smoke is going to blow over my way.

I am not a anti-smoking **** either, but it really sucks having to breath in someone else's bad habits.

 

Yes we have it and I love it.
Smoking areas are becoming more and more restricted even in places outside public buildings and in other traveled areas.

This is great especially for people with breathing problems including my Mom who has asthma and is allergic to smoke too.

I'm glad you brought that up Shane. For me it's been 6 years, 2 months and 29 days since I quit.
Best thing I ever did for myself. Soon after that I persuaded my brother to stop too.....

There used to be an equal number of smokers as non-smokers.....Now non-smokers are in a minority at about 25%.......and the #'s are declining fast.

i disagree with the smoking ban, but in ontario bars have lost tons of business because nobody wants to go outside to have a smoke. you might as well watch the game at home. they should have left the smoking sections. I got a ticket for smoking in my company vehicle because it is considered a place of work. non smokers should have a clean section, but just so you know the law isntnecessarily a good thing. watch how dead the smaller bars become. the bigger ones dont suffer much

 

I have Asthma as well Colin, so I can relate to the breathing issues you get when enhaling second hand smoke.

That's awesome that you quit Colin, I am sure you feel better becuase of it. For some reason though, I just can't picture you smoking. Both of my parents have always smoked, although my father quit almost 3 months ago. He's had some bad days, but overall he is doing very well. He is too stubborn to let it beat him. My mother on the other hand still hasn't found it in her to let the habit go.

 

Actually smoking in restaurants and bars has been banned here for a couple of years now too. The ban now includes public places like outdoors cafes, offices, shopping malls.

This is a big issue with me too Shane and I'm pleased it's making further progress.

I agree Burns & I don't smoke & never have, but it should be an option? If the bars think it is a good idea then they allow a smoking section & if people who don't smoke don't want to go there then they don't have to & if bars or any business thinks it is better to allow no smoking then they can demand there is no smoking in those places & people who don't want any smoke on the same block as them can go there? Makes sense to me?

Keep big brother out of it. Mind you, I live in a city where it is allowed everywhere until at least 2008 for now. That is because Calgary is free enterprise and PC politically unlike some of the other Western Canadian Communist Provinces like Manitoba, & Saskatchewan.

I have to deal with governments daily in all 4 Western Canadian Provinces, so I am little frustrated with the Government knows best communism that I deal with every day outside of Alberta... guess that is why I moved here!

I could really go on, especially in my business, and if the media really knew the truth about what the NDP was doing in MB & SK & put it out there, people would go balistic, but another day.....

Now no more. and yes I'm very pleased to be rid of that curse. I also don't worry so much about my brother now that he's quit too.

So glad to hear that your Dad kicked it. Congratulate him for me and wish him well.......tell him every day how glad you are of him quitting.
That must be very difficult for your Dad being that your Mom still smokes.
I really commend his stick-to-it-iveness....

On the other hand, with no other smoker in the house, it will make it that much easier for your Mom to stop now. Tell her you love her and encourage her too.

they should leave it up to the owner of the place to decide. and if an owner allows smoking in a bar, smokers can go to the non smoking bar.

 

Here in Saint John, NB, there has not been one bar that has gone out of business since the smoking ban back in 2004. In fact, alot of my friends started going out to bars/pubs/restaurants becuase they no longer had to worry about enhaling second hand smoke. Also, I don't think I have ever seen one effective smoking section in a public place.
