Good for them. I prefer to have corporations knowingly causing addictions, and health problems/deaths to citizens pay for it rather than with my tax dollars. With corporations paying it's really only money going from smoking customers back to the care of those same smokers that will inevitably need it.

My view of the Government:
sure you can start a company and sell cigarettes
sure we will tax your company like any other
sure we know the product you make is harmful to health
sure we will add our own tobacco tax
(http://www.trd.fin.gov.on.ca/userfil..._3_9005_1.html)
sure we will charge retailers for a permit to sell tobacco products
sure we know your product will drain money from the health care system and
we have the right to sue you for the money you cost us
The government allows the sale of tobacco because it is so lucrative this is the only reason why it still continues. Yet they do not want to be accountable.
The day the province of Ontario sues a tobacco company is the day I sue the province of Ontario for their accountability of the deaths of thousands of Canadians.
eg. There is a law to find someone accountable for an accident that drunk person caused after leaving their place of establishment or residence. They do not go after the manufacturer of the alcoholic beverage.
Just one more thing...this is directed to people in Ontario in regards to the native stand off in Caledonia.

Now please read the bold lettering.
Because the stand off has settled down there is going to be strict enforcement regarding native cigarettes. If you are caught with un-tax marked cigarettes off the reserve they can impound your vehicle, the only way you can get it back is paying the resale value. Nice huh? Just your government trying to get some of their money back. I am unsure if this is an OPP or RCMP enforcement.

Good luck taking on the Province if that ever happens. I hope you've got deep pockets and a lot of patience.

I still miss it (I know thats stupid) but it does not bother me. We have came a long way with smoking restrictions. I can remember sitting in a plane during Trans-Atlantic flights smoking my brains out in the plane beside children, non-smokers, etc. How totally sick that was, yet at that time it was the norm to do that and no one complained. I still can't believe we did that. We used to travel in the car and anyone that smoked would do so, it didn't matter who was in the car, infants or children or whoever. Yes we have progressed, too late for some though whose lives have already been damaged or lost through smoking.
My mother smoked most of her life and finally quit when I had to rush her to the Hospital because she couldn't breathe, she was 82. She survived but for the last 3 years she has been on oxygen all the time because she has COPD which is usually caused by smoking.
Now any of my friends that smoke do not even do it in their own homes when they want to have a smoke, they go outside. So if they are anyplace else they do the same as they would at home, they go outside.
I sit with smokers outside, that never bothers me, but now I can't handle it in close quarters inside where it is contained.
I apologize for going on.

whether they wanted you to or not, we probably would look differently at drinking in public, too.

I am personally excited to see Calgary go smoke free, and feel that it couldn't happen soon enough. I rarely go out to the bars anymore because I hate coming home reaking of smoke. If you still want to smoke, in light of all recent knowledge about it, take your butt outside. I've seen "Thank You For Smoking" and it was very funny, but I still think that people should have the freedom to choose what we breath in.
