sandbags in the trunk for snow traction
other than winter tires and careful driving i've heard that putting weight, like a 50 lb sandbag in the trunk will help with traction issues in the snow for powerful rear wheel drive cars like ours. Can anyone comment?

Re: sandbags in the trunk for snow traction
I heard that and tried that on my previous car as well....and the result aren't impressive to me, and seems more oversteer when doing cornering. Actually, once our cars got a set of good snow tires and make sure VDC is on, then that should be enough for our normal winter driving.

Re: sandbags in the trunk for snow traction
I usually keep about 100lbs of sand in the trunk. It can be helpful starting out from a dead stop in very low traction conditions, like on an incline. Conversely, the extra weight can change the handling balance of the car and the extra mass can make it a little slower to come to a stop.

Re: sandbags in the trunk for snow traction
Sand bad idea, fuel as suggested- good idea. And good winter tires. If you must use the sand, which will turn your car into a big pendulum if you're not careful, recommend having it between the axles- further forward the better. The fuel of course, by design, will be well placed, and as an added bonus, you won't get water in your fuel lines from condensation in the tank.
