Cops will take your cars! WTF????

I've been reading many articles regarding the new legislature about street racing. here is one of them.

Canadian province claims power to seize, destroy modified cars
06/21/07, 12:55pm, EDT

Police in Canada's most populous province have the right to seize and
destroy any car that has been modified for street racing, Ontario's top
prosecutor claims.

“If we can establish someone has parts and they're juicing up their car —
obviously for the purpose of street racing — then we can seize those
vehicles,” Ontario Attorney General Michael Bryant said Wednesday, according
to the Canadian Press.

“We will seize it and you will never see it again. We will crush your car,
we will crush the parts.”

“We don't need to wait until that car hits the road fully loaded,” he said,
adding that modified cars are as dangerous as explosives, capable of causing
catastrophic damage.

Mr. Bryant was also an architect of Ontario's recent pit bull ban, which was
designed to "protected from the menace" of "dangerous dogs," which he
characterized as "nothing but a loaded weapon waiting to go off."

Bryant's comments on modified cars seem to suggest Ontario's liberal
government is exempt fromthe Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, which
states: "Everyone has the right to be secure against unreasonable search or
seizure."

It's not known if Bryant's latest comments are an accurate reflection of
Canadian or Ontario law, or if police will use this apparent power, but it's
clear Ontario's police are getting tired of dangerous driving.

“There is no excuse for street racing and aggressive driving, such as the
high speeds and unsafe lane changes we have seen recently,” Ontario
Provincial Police Commissioner Julian Fantino said in a recent press
release.

The Leftlane Perspective: We can't help but wonder if Mr. Bryant got his
idea from a recent Volkswagen ad campaign.
What a bunch of BS. I don't condone street racing but taking your car because you have added parts to make your car go faster? Come on!!!
That is the most rediculous thing I have ever heard.

So if you add an intake and a K & N filter you must be a street racer.

Just be careful out there guys, or maybe it's me that should be carefull. They may be looking for cars to make an example of.

They're blowing smoke. It's the equivalent of arresting a guy coming out of the beer store for drunk driving. Not gonna happen.

There was just an article the other day about how they were crushing cars in CA. The problem was not just street racing but a lot of the Honda guys have other oem Honda parts like motors and trannys from other cars and if the VIN's come up "hot" they will crush the cars.

Gee, I sypathise with what they're trying to achieve but to go to those lengths is going way too far......
Let's hope someone gains a little sanity and those parameters get watered down somewhat.....

Great analogy Kevin, I completely agree.

I'm not a big fan of this whatsoever, given that no crime has been committed yet. If however someone has had a history of street racing, I am all for crushing their vehicle.......as per my comments in the thread in the OT section on this topic. here.

But in the end, I don't see how the gov't has the right to destroy someone's vehicle solely based on what parts it's made of.

I didn't read the Record article, but in my view it's ridiculous for another reason - so it's illegal and a crushable offence to hop up your '89 Civic to make 150hp, but perfectly legal to drive a 500+ hp Z06 Corvette?? I don't even really agree with crushing a car for having stolen parts on it; it's just stolen property. They don't burn your house down for having your neighbor's hot big-screen TV in it, do they? Enforce and punish harshly the offence -- street racing -- not the parts, not the intent, but the crime itself.

Very good point Wayne. The only difference I can think of is that most of the kids that street race regularly probably don't drive Z06's etc since they can't afford them. It still doesn't mean the tuners should be crushed for being hopped up.

As to the crushing of the hopped up stolen parts street racer cars I liked an idea someone posted. Strip the hot parts out and sell the cars to others with the money going reduce govt debt. or for accident victims. That would be good punishment.

For sure, that's a given.

I like that! Good punishment, less waste, good cause...it's a common-sense approach. Which means, of course, that it'll never happen. A lot of administrative work, I suppose, which might make it less than practical. Too bad.

I call complete BS on this the goverment should not take these mesurements to try to put a end to street racing. i would understand if you were caught in the act but attempting to crush your car without you even doing anything wrong is most def. not fair. i say ALL modded cars in toronto should meet up at once place and drive the speed limit on the highway and then we will see where this sterotype will go.

with that being said lets organize a huge cruise! with the motto MCASR(Modded cars againts street racing)

Apparently in Canada you don't actually own anything. All property in Canada can apparently be seized by the crown. Extreme examples are when they knock down peoples homes to build freeways/power lines or if they discover oil under your property.

I'm not a lawyer and I don't know if it's 100% true or not but it's just something I've heard. Either way it's BS.
