Winter Tires + Block Heater?

Other question,

Sorry to remind you guys but winter is coming soon and seeing as I am the only active member here from Winnipeg (We get hit hard with that white stuff along with the -50C weather); have a couple question for you guys:

Should I get a block heater installed? My bros BMW doesn't have one but in the -50C weather it turns over roughly. The Accord has no difficulties with the block heater. I am kind of turned off by the plug outside of the car.

I also need a set of Winter tires. I am on a budget as I am still a University student so hopefully you guys can keep that in mind. My budget for winter tires right now is $800 that includes install and all.

The tires on the Infiniti G35C as it sits are 18s Hi Performance Tires. The car was from Florida so I doubt he had any winter tires... But seeing how this is the first winter what kind of winter tires can I get in my budget?

I had my heart set on the Blizzaks but unfortunately the 100% price jack for 18s versus 17s make it hop out of my budget. Are there any 18's GOOD winter tires that can be had for this budget? I was thinking I could buy the 17s and put them on a a set of universal winter rims but does anyone know where I can get a set of 4 winter rims under $200? If anyone knows where I can get my hands on a pair of universal winter rims for under $200 or a set of 18s Blizzaks please let me know.

Appreciate any advice.

You can buy from the states with the dollar value so low and still save. You can probably get a set of 17's steelies for $200, look around.

There are two threads below there where is some good information on winter tires.

A block heater is a must in the winter if your car lives outside in Winnipeg. I lived there for 9 years. Cars may start without them but that is putting a lot of unnecessary wear on the engine at start up due to oil as thick as molasses. The care of your engine is more important than the the look of a plug on your car for a few months. Put the plug under the hood.

Thnx for the responses. Do you know how Infiniti will place it if it is under the hood? Could I just hide the cord in the engine bay in summer?

I went to CT, they said I could place 16s on my G35C? The 17s steelies price is not bad at all, 69 bucks at CT. Just throw on a pair of a Blizzaks and keep my 18s mint for winter (no curb rash, or any damage at all on the rims, recently refinished).

Heed the wise Bull. Also, if you can find some used wheels you can order BS Blizzaks from the states for around $120 each. I just bought 4 17s fro 113 each; yours may vary. Good luck, and definitely go with both the block heater and the winter tires. Yes, you can easily hide the cord under the hood for summer. Or do like I see lots of other people do, use a 25-foot extension cord and wrap it around the driver's mirror when not in use/while driving.

....or the savvy Swivel.

Haha, I can picture those cords on the mirrors now. I remember lots of cars with them coming out from the front grille and snaking over to the radio antennae flapping away on the paint. We don't see any of that here on the East. My days of block heaters and outdoor plug ins everywhere are a distant memory.

Thnx for the advice, and lol, yep that is what Winnipeg is in winter. Picture a really old Dodge Caravan with cardboard cut out from a potato chip box covering the radiator with a 25 ft extension cord tied around their radio antenna, now multipy that by 600,000 and that is how Winnipeg looks in January, lol.

Oh sorry, other question for you guys. There is a G member here selling his winter tires for $500, 16s with Kumho (?) tires. Would 16s from a Sedan fit a Non brembo G35C?
