I tried an experiment on the last tank and drove like an absolute pu$$y for the entire fill.

Never once WOT, only a couple of times even moderate throttle. To keep economy in mind, I scrolled the instantaneous fuel economy bar graph onto the center display betwixt the speedo and tach as a reminder to be a good boy.

I got a whopping 460kms before the low fuel warning lit.

Some data:

Fill date........range(km)......L/100km (calculated)
6-Mar-08.......428..............14.8
24-Mar-08......399..............15.2
13-Apr-08......370..............15.6
2-May-08.......407..............15.6
15-May-08.....287..............14.9
23-May-08.....270..............14.6
10-Jun-08.....460.............13.0
(The two tanks in May were short fills, only needed ~2/3 tank.)

So
1000km/month @ 13L/100km = 130L/mo or $195/mo @ $1.50/L
or
1000km/month @ 15L/100km = 150L/mo or $225/mo @ $1.50/L

The $1.50/L is an estimate, paid $1.449 today for premium.

With these figures, it works out to about $1 per day saved, all the time feeling like a rolling road block and having no fun at all...

So, is it worth it?

I'm thinking no. I don't typically drive super hard, but do tend to romp on it from time-to-time.Back to driving more like normal on the next tank, but perhaps I'll keep the econ gauge on display.

nice data..

i'm jealous of mini coopers that are just as fun to drive if not more then our cars and get about 600-650km on a tank.. makes me want to buy one seriously.

My thinking as well. I've been driving in the same prussy manner since I had a tune up ( not quite a full tank, but I'll fill up today ) to see what my km/L will be. It's borrrrrrrrrrrrring. I figure 3-5 $'s a day for fun is worth it.

I dont understand how some people's mileage is so bad. I am stuck in stop-go traffic at 20 km/h half the time and the other half the time I drive in 40-60km/h roads with lots of lights and I get about 12.8-13.0l/100km real. This is zero highway and I go WOT AT LEAST once a day as well.

I think the amount of volume leads to bad fuel economy for those of us in the GTA. Not saying Ottawa doesn't have bad traffic, but I don't think it's fair to compare the two.

I wouldn't be surprised if our results are similair to those in that live in LA or NY/DC.

My results are especially bad if you consider that my commute is ~10km each way, 2 traffic lights and little to no stop and go - hardly any idling at all!

First fill up since my tune up. Been driving very conservatively, no WOT, slow starts and max 120 on the highway. 61.3 L for 571km gave me 9.3/100km.
So ..... fluck it. All you Camry drivers that I pulled over for, NO MORE. Didn't save me enough to compensate/justify what I went through. Just after the fill up I passed a double tanker just after we both went through a roundabout WOT, felt good, sounded great. Did it matter he rolled up to the same stop light I was stopped at 6 Km later, no.

Whatacar, I cold not agree more. It hurts way to much to drive like granny just to squeeze an extra 50-60km out of a tank. lol

DOMO Yup, especially late when you're the only one and miss your turn.
