Goin' drag racin' tonight

I'm headed out to Mission Raceway tonight for the Friday Night Street Legal event. $30 gets you 5-6 runs after a tech inspection. i just got a Mobil 1 oil/filter change, and all other fluids/tire pressures are topped up and ready to go.

i'm headed out with a buddy (who thinks he can drive) who has an '03 350Z 6MT. steak dinner and world domination on the line. i've done some racing before and we both admit i'm the better driver. he's never attempted anything like this before.

his car has a 5/16" spacer and a popcharger, otherwise stock. mine is shown in the sig. i took out the spare tire which shaved ~50lbs. combined with the coupe midpipe/HKS muffler (~50lbs off), and the fact that my bud outweighs me by ~30lbs, we are close in rated curb weight.

any predictions on the outcome?

Have a good one tonight bro, Hope you get some decent #'s.

Watch out for any IS-F's would you?
If conditions are right, I've heard they should be good for 12's.

Cheers and be safe...

...anyhow, the G destroyed the Z. 4-0 in consecutive runs. clearly the Z wasn't able to put the power down, or was not making enough of it.

here was a typical race slip:

Z(him): R/T=.492, 60'=2.5, 1/4=15.49 @ 94.5mph

G(me): R/T=0.462, 60'=2.1, 1/4=14.4 @ 96.9mph

both of us left plenty on the table with the r/t's. i should have seen 14.2 and 98mph if i was on the ball. perhaps if we had stayed later we would have dialed-in better. after 4 runs i didn't want to thrash the car anymore...

one thing i was surprised about was the weight of my car. 3600lbs exactly with me (~195lbs) in it and 1/2 tank of gas. the Z was 3460lbs. i thought i'd be at 3500lbs since the manual states ~3370lbs stock and i had removed the spare tire and stock middy...

Kudos for the decent times bro....As you know, a lot depends of track conditions, air temp, humidity, shifting tecnique, traction, track temp/conditions, practice etc etc etc......lots of variables...

You got some respectable times there.

^ thx mate. it was a blast. i've never done a proper drag race before, only some road course racing about 10 years ago.

you're right about the variables involved. the Z was having some traction issues, but the driver needs to account for that and feather the clutch. which he didn't. i was impressed with how the G hooked up on the sticky track surface. i avoided the burnout pit and aside from some mild axle tramp had no problems with traction...

Reaction time does NOT effect your 1/4mile times unless you doing sanctioned racing. The timer doent start until your wheels break the light beam. You could sit there for 2sec after the light goes green and still run 14.4sec. Good 60' time though I would love to come run at Mission after I get my car all dialed in. Mission = sea level, Alberta = +2000ft.

thx for the info, i did not know that. i always thought the timer started when the light turned green.

i guess guys try and hit a quick r/t for the "hole shot" against their opponent, but not the 1/4 timer. i think my best was 0.311s, but several guys were at 0.1s...
