they could be flood damaged, rebuilt write offs etc....

True, how can one gaurentee that the an out of province inspection has been performed?

Wouldnt running a carfax notify me of such problems as flood damage, rebuilt write offs, etc.?

Given that they are a dealership and selling the vehicle; I am pretty sure the out of province inspection has been completed. You can always check the door jab to see if it has the RIV thing.

Carfax might notify you of those problems; but some people sold the cars without making a claim so the accident might have never been reported. Carfax will notify if you car was in an area of natural disaster but I would not rely solely on carfax. If you are going to deal with this dealership; get a mechanic to check the car out for you; have it raised up and look for any welds or structural damage.

Mechanic + Carfax will be a pretty good match; good luck in your purchase.

Check how long the car has been sitting on the lot, I checked out a car there before and the car was sitting there over the entire winter, the brake looked like they were ceased

If dealers buy cars, do they do there due dilegence and make sure there is no liens on the car before it comes onto the lot????
Should it be the responsibility of the used car dealer to do lien search or the customer?

When buying a car, don't assume the dealer is responsible for doing anything. Make sure you do your homework. If you are getting a US car (like I did - and I think its a great way to go), don't trust the dealers. Even if they give you a carfax, spend the $20 and do one independently just to make sure it isn't forged. Then get a mechanic in the area to inspect the car for you.

The carfax report will disclose any financial issues with the car (e.g. outstanding liens). But when you go to pick up the car, make sure the VINs match between your carfax, and the contract (watch out for a bait and switch. Sometimes a dealer advertises one VIN, but switches the car in the fine print of the contract).

Also, if are bringing it from the US, make sure the dealer gives you a recall letter, a temporary 30 day plate, and originals of the car title etc.

PS. I'm gonna try to make it out to the Speedstar meet on the 21st. If any of you folks have questions you want to ask about bringing in a car from the US, try to come out, and I'll try to answer your questions in person. I've brought 6 cars in from the US privately.

I just did some research, and if the dealer is a member of the Used Cars Dealer Association of Ontario, any car they sell must be free of liens.

"By law, dealers must guarantee title against stolen vehicles. Also, dealers must guarantee that there are no liens on the vehicle. They must use Bills of Sale that conform to the law, and are required to report all known material facts about the vehicle"

www.ucda.org

I would love to join you guys at the meet but unfortunately, I will not be in Toronto at that time.

That is correct Intense660. What is so sketchy with their business is that they had only 3 coupes available for sale, but trader.ca show like 5-6 coupes for sale. Also, the asking price on the 06 models are like $35500 (sticker price tag)or in that neighborhood The advertised price they say on trader.ca is $27000 to $32000. WTF???

Yup, its the place right beside pacific mall.

quote from this link...be careful!
"They are crooks! I went there a few years ago, they had a Corolla on the lot. Mileage had 142,000km on the odometer. Looked up, there's a sticker from last oil change and it has 223,000km listed on it!

Also, and completely unrelated, the owner of German Star Motors ended up hitting my Mum a few years ago. Anyhow, the ***** wanted us to go to his shop were he claims he can "Clean up" accidents like they never happened all the time!"
