Dealer messed up my rim :(

Went in to 417-Infinti (Ottawa) with a flat tire. When I picked up the car the rim was scratched-up due to inconsiderate use of air tools and it seemed like someone bashed the centre plastic piece and the surrounding metal with a screw-driver (trying to pry it out ?). Since it was late and the service dept. was closed, I called one of the business manager to come check it out before I drive-off.

Next day I called the service manager, drove the car for him to take a look. He accepts the responsibility and says he'll re-finish it. Now the question is, my rim's only got like 300km, I put winter tire/rims right after I bought the car late last year and put the summer's back on last week, should I ask for a new rim ?

Now, I'm usually not to picky about things, but this is a major screw-up and shows total lack of care and responsibility on part of the mechanic. I've been to 417 before to swap my winters/summer and never had any problems.

Is it too un-reasonable to ask for a new rim ?

I wouldn't be satisfied unless the rim was replaced. Go for it.

Re: Dealer messed up my rim :(

I keep in touch with a high-school friend who is now the service manager at a busy Honda dealership in Mississauga. He told me that his best mechanics work on the more complex jobs... and the least-experienced, least-competent apprentices do all of the oil changes, tire changes, scheduled maintenance work etc. For that reason, those are the guys he must constantly supervise to ensure that a proper standard of care is being met. He feels that poor workmanship during an oil change or tire swap is therefore ultimately the service manager's fault.

If what he says is true of all dealerships, then the majority of us with new G's will usually have our cars worked on by the least-skilled/ least experienced mechanics at a given service department.

I've heard nothing but bad stories about the service dept. where I recently bought my car from 3 or 4 other people on these boards... which leads me to suspect that the service manager there may have established a poor standard for "acceptable" work.
So I might consider finding a new place where the service manager demands a higher standard of workmanship from ALL the mechanics.

Re: Dealer messed up my rim :(

Everyone makes mistakes- a new wheel for the sake of the finish is a wee bit extreme, since in the life of the wheel it is bound to be damaged in one way or another.

We deal we customers who have so many scratches and dings its not funny. AND THEY WANT WARRANTY because they feel the wheel is a design flaw.

Anyways, repair of the wheel should suffice, but if the job looks like crap then request a new wheel. But if you are truly firm on this decision ask for a new wheel.

Re: Dealer messed up my rim :(

what do they use to take the bolts off so that it doesn't scratch the wheel and/or lug nut? cuz it's all shiney around there and looks very easy to scratch..

Re: Dealer messed up my rim :(

I kind of agree with you, and at the end I didn't ask them for a new wheel, the refinish job was good. However, it was a big hassle for me, because I had to drive back to the dealership three times, once to show them the damage and the other two times to drop and pick up the car.

I'm very busy during the day time and it not easy for me to visit the east end of town while I work in the west-end. If the service dept. is a bit more careful it can save people like me a lot of trouble... the icing on the cake was that when I picked up my car after the rim was fixed I heard this really ugly clunking sound from one of the wheels on the way back home.. guess what ..the wheel was not torqued right, I had to spend exactly 4hrs. at the dealership the very next day to get it fixed (when I picked up the car, the sevice dept. was closed)..... I didn't buy this car to spend time at the dealership or to play tag games on the phone with the sevice manager... my previous car was a Lexus, the only time I spent at the dealership in the last three years was to drop off and pick up my car for oil changes, the loaner was always ready, the service was impeccable, they still send me that wonderful magazine in the mail every quarter!...

I love the car, but don't like the service... and hate the complimentary screw-ups...

A friend of mine wanted to swap his winter wheels for his expensive aftermarket wheels. He went to a local wrench and they had some kid do the work. The wheels were tightned with the air gun, no torque wrench to be found! On top of that the socket fell off the gun and damaged the wheel slightly.
