Someone told me that tires for the g35 coupe were extremely expensive here in canada,is that true?

 

It can be, depending what kind of tires you get.

 

That's a relative question depending both on the tire brand/model and each persons idea of expensive.

 

I tend to agree - if you buy really good high end tires. For example - I literally just put new rear tires on yesteday. They are Potenza RE050A Pole Position - basically top of the line for bridgestone max performance summer tires. I paid 225 each from tirerack shipped to the states. The exact same tire here costs about $450-500 dollars each plus tax.

You do the math...

Different example - Michelin Pilot Sport 2 - the top of the line for michelin costs about $250 a piece at Tirerack. The exact same tire at Costco here in Ottawa costs $458.

Needless to say, I have not purchased tires in Canada in nearly 5 years. I also buy tires for the wifes 9-3 sport sedan from tire rack as well. She gets Pirelli Pzero Nero on her car. I save about $600-800 on a set of four versus buying them here. Winter setups are also signifigantly cheaper. I purchased a set of 4 steel rims, TPMS sensors, and bridgestone blizzaks for the subaru and paid about $800 shipped to Ogedensburg. The tires alone in canada were about $1000 from most of the places in Ottawa, forget the TPMS sensors (one place wanted $150 each).

Just wanted everyone to know - Tires are much cheaper in the states. I know first hand.

No, but you should be asking Tire Rack. You can even get an on line quote yourself.

 

I agree tires from the US are cheaper and especially so with Michelin. I splurged on the PS2's. Great tires but very short tread life.

The Bridgestones you mention are available in Canada closer to the US price though - under $300/tire from a place like 1010tire. They also have the Michelins for under $340.

 

Everything is cheaper is the US than Canada, what a rip-off!

 

I couldn't find anything when I looked anything. tiretrends.com had the RE040 runflats for 442 a tire - so I didn't even bother looking. I found the front PS2 for about 340 but the rears were still around $400 bucks. I saw the regular 050A for about 300 but not the pole position ones.

Even still - $100 or more a tire is not worth it to me. Tires are simply 25-50% cheaper in the states vs. buying them retail in Canada. Again, I haven't purchased tires in Canada for about 5 years and everything I try to source something local, I feel like I'm getting hosed. You may be able to find something that is "close" to the Canadian price, but why bother. I know everytime I get tires in the states, I'm paying quite a bit less than what I would have paid here. I even had a guy at a tire place tell me that tirerack sells tires below his invoice - so there is no way he can touch the price.

 

This is the trick - if you want to save $$$ don't have them shipped to Canada. they will ship them via UPS and UPS will reeeeem you on brokerage charges. In the end you won't save much. You need to get them dropshipped to an installer in the US and drive down and get them installed. That's what I do. There is an installer about 1hr from my house, so I just make a little morning trip out of it.

If you are in Montreal, the place where I go is Goss tire in Malone NY. It is just across the border from Cornwall. So it would about the same distance for you as well.

When you order on Tirerack, instead of choosing "ship to my house" choose "ship to a Tire Rack Installer".

PS - forgot to mention that when tirerack ships within the US the shipping is pretty cheap. I think I paid $40 bucks the last time I had a set of 4 tires drop shipped to Malone. When I'm not having them installed there, I have them shipped to Ogdensburg NY which is even closer to my house (about 45 minutes away). Shipping to there is even cheaper.

They will drop ship the tires to the installer and send you a tracking number. You just call them and make an appointment and get them put on. They even dispose of the old tires for you.

The cool thing about Malone is that there is a championship golf course up the road from Goss tire. You can get your tires put on and play a round. In the end, it is a nice little trip. When I'm in a rush, I just leave the house early and get down there for when they open at 8:00, get the tires put on and be home by around 10:30.

 

No worries. I didn't say it wasn't worth it. I bought mine state side too since at the time there was a huge price gap.

The CDN prices have dropped a lot in the past number of months probably due to the sustained strong dollar and depleting inventory at their "old" prices. There is no question tire rack sells for less than some can buy. It's the same in some other industries here compared to the US.

 

not just the tires, everything in US is cheaper, look at the new g37 prices, same car 100 kms away from toronto, 10000 dollar cheaper.. damn US prices are nice.
