It would be good to prevent it from happening rather than repairing, if we could.

I agree. That's not an area you want to have problems as repairing is difficult and $$$.

Interestingly we just had to replace the gas cap and vent valve on H's car last week.

Good pic of yours Deane, now we need an affected one from the dreaded rust.

I was just assumong it went from the outside edge of the cap mating surface and worked in, but pictures would be great to show just where this is happening.

Sounds like a problem that Infiniti should own up to and provide a permanent fix at their cost.

Thanks. That's kind of what I gather from what Sam had said too. I'm interested in confirming where it is and why it's happening.

A permanent fix is right. Really shouldn't be something excluded from rust/perforation warranty.

Good pics Randy, thanks.

It's interesting that the rust is just on the lower part of the filler neck. I wonder if this is common to all of these filler neck rust problems.

^+1

I can see how that would not be good for an effective seal.

I wonder if it has anything to do with contact from the station filling nozzle?

I'm definitely going to watch mine. Right now I don't have any place on my car that I have found even a spot of rust.

I've sanded this down by hand once and applied some lithium grease already, seems to have come back in ~8 months time.

^good to know. Any theories on why that one area is continually rusting?

seems like the paint is off the lip so I'm guessing from rubbing against the gas nozzle when pumping?

^so the finish is now different on that area from contact and probably now from sanding it?

That's my suspicion...somehow contact from the pump nozzle is causing wear or chemical reaction causing the rust. Strange thing is why it doesn't rust further into the pipe.

I know that I'm quite **** about putting the nozzle in gently with minimal contact so maybe that's the difference.
