OBDII scan tool for $40 at Princess Auto

I just picked up this OBDII code reader from Princess Auto in Hamilton for $38.88.

Why is there no emoticon giving its middle finger to an Infiniti dealership?

It works really well. I had the Service Engine Soon light on so I figured now was a good time to make the purchase.

The unit comes with a CD containing 8000 manufacturer codes, but unfortunately the CD only runs on Windows so I haven't been able to look up any codes yet. The tool connects and reads from my 03 G35 perfectly. There are a lot of functions that I haven't learned yet, but it does clear the codes and give some basic information about various monitors such as engine misfiring, sensors, EGR, EVAP, A/C, etc.

It comes with a pdf manual, but it's about 20kb too large to upload to this forum.

+1 on that. I bought that exact one about a year ago, and it works great. It will give you the code but you have to look it up on the cd/booklet that comes with it. It is also very easy to use, goda love Princess Auto. I just had my first start up with the turbo on and the light came on. I checked the codes and it took me straight to the problem.

hahaha, Ian.....I'm sure it'll do.....

shakin,
That's one of the best 'tools' you can buy for the car these days.
I've had one for years and use it on all my rides.

I figure it's paid for itself many times over, considering what Infiniti, or any of them, would charge for a scan and code clearing......

For the people who have scan tools, does the light often come one, then when you scan there is no code? That happened to me today. The light did not come back on (yet).

I have also had garages sometimes just clear the code and tell me to come back in if the light comes on again, so I'm assuming there are a number of temporary problems that can cause the light to come on, but not have the code be readable.

From what I've been told, a MIL (Check engine light) can be generated by a minor and temporary fault in the pollution control system such as a sticking valve.
This sticking valve, and thus the fault, will correct itself and will not have generated a code in the ECU memory thus leaving nothing to download or read.

Another issue that will generate a MIL is a gas cap that's been left off or loose.
This issue will apparantly not leave a code in memory to download.

I've been told that this type of issue must be "read" while the MIL is on to get a hint of its cause/origin.

^I had the gas cap one on my Z4M
It came on soon after a fillup.
I tightened the cap & just like you said... it cleared itself before I got a chance to check it;
when I did, ....nadda
