My Bro is thinking of buying an S4.......
The time has come for my Bro to give up his Maxima for something more fun and newer, so far he's leaning towards an 04' 05' Audi S4 6spd. I've tried to convince him to get a newer G sedan or an 06' 07' coupe but he's dead against the coupe due to the amount he sees on the roads and not sure about the sedan yet (I'm working on it ) What are your thoughts of the S4 I know its quick and the interior is realy upscale but I think it looks kinda plain from the outside definitly not as aggressive as say an M3 (which would be my choice).

the s4 is a great driving car. the exhaust note from that V8 is awesome, and quattro is a good awd system.
that said, they are small cars with limited headroom. they are also heavy, with much of the weight ahead of the front axle. the ownership costs are huge, with routine maintenance costing an arm and a leg. for example, they take 10L+ of synthetic oil and the oil filters are $40-$50. i don't think the M3 would be much different, but i don't know.
a good friend of mine has an '04 S4 6spd. while i love it, i don't have to pay for it. he had an '03 Z before the S4 and misses the Z everyday.

If he's getting the 09 S4 I'd say go for it. I think the lines are classic and I LOOOOOOVE the headlight design!!! hence why I'm doing an LED clearance strip in on my 06 headlight
I'd take an A4 (let alone an S4) before I got the M3. I just hate all BMWs other than the 6 series with the mother of them all - M6

While shopping for my "G" I test drove the S4, the Acura TL, the Lexus 330 and a few BMW 3 Series vehicles. The Audi interior is definitely upscale compared to the BMW, and to a lesser degree the "G" and the Acura TL (the Lexus is the benchmark for this category in terms of luxury). In terms of performance, there's no way the Audi will outperform the "G" - and the performance benchmark in this category is still the BMW (despite the fact the Bimmer is not as fast as the "G"). But what turned me off from the German cars is the total cost of ownership (TCO). The German vehicles are much more expensive to maintain - do the research, it's a fact. All things considered, the "G" may not be the best at anything, compared to others in this category (except maybe acceleration numbers). But the beauty of the "G" is that it is clearly the best value - in other words "the whole is greater than the sum of it's parts".

The 2004-2005 are nice S4's. Wicked interiors and lots of power from that V8 along with the quattro. It does handle well and can take an m3 through the corners but not through a straight as it is quite heavy. It is a very different car from the g coupe though, with the weight, doors and engine along with awd vs rwd. I know the m3 is faster than the g35, so i think the g35 and the s4 would be fairly close in performance.

I based it on a fifth gear I believe. They raced a B5 S4 and E46 M3. In the straight line the M3 was quicker, but through the corners the quattro helped quite a bit and put the S4 ahead, but once they got to the straight again the M3 pulled ahead and beat the s4 by a slight margin, but I may be wrong.
