Winter tires on 05 sedan

I saw the other thread on winter tires for a coupe but wasn't so sure if I wanted to hijack it with my own questions, hence this new thread.

Anyways, I am getting quotes for a iPike tire/wheel package and had a few questions. The car has never been driven in the winter.

1. Is the tpms on the winter wheels necessary? I was going over the G manual again and they mentioned that replacing the tires would require resetting the tpms system. I'm not sure how much more this would cost but I'm assuming the quotes I've been given don't include it.

2. What's the opinion on having krowne or something similar done on the car? As this is my only car, I'll need to ensure the car will last me for at least the next few years. Would it be necessary?

Thanks for reading and I'll look forward to your input!

tpms not necessary. on mine the warning light stays on all winter, piece of tape solves that.
no experience regarding the krowne to comment.

Many people run without the TPMS in their rims, no problem.

Yea I was leaning towards not getting the tpms - didn't seem too necessary.

So i'm assuming when I throw on my summer tires again, the system would auto. recognize it w/o having to go to the dealer right?

That's correct. I ran them in my winter set-up, when I put my winter wheels and tires back on the sensors would start to work again and my dash light would go out.

^ Yep, same here. Save your money or spend it on something else. You get used the the light on and barely notice it after a few days.

I ended up using my 17" OEM wheels as my winter rims. When I took in my 19" Coupe Rays that came with TPMS in to put summer tire on, I had to pay to get them programmed. I think it cost somewhere around $100-125 to get them programmed.

I personally would lean towards buying a set of TPMS for your winter wheels. Having the light on for half a year would drive me nuts. In addition, TPMS actually do have a safety benefit. They will let you know when your tire pressure is low before it gets to a dangerous level. To me that is worth the extra $70 per sensor. Spread that out over the life of your car and it really isn;t much extra to pay.

I'm #110 on the list for a set to go on N's CR-V.

The problem is, that you have to get them reprogrammed each spring and fall, if you have 2 sets of sensors. So ad on that cost for twice a year.
Sensors are nice in the winter when it is too cold to check tire pressures, but other than that it is no problem checking pressures the rest of the year for me.
There is nothing unsafe about not running sensors as long as your pressures are checked on a regular basis. It's worked for me for over 40 years.

Maybe the insurance company would deny a claim if TPMS weren't there?

j/k.

I run my OE wheels with winters and use the factory TPMS. I bought another set of 17s for summer with TPMS and get them reprogrammed fall and spring. The local Nissan dealer does it for 15 minutes of labour.

Odd thing about the TPMS: after putting the summers on this spring the light stayed off for 6 weeks before finally tripping. Did it really take that long to recognize it didn't have registered sensors? Then the other week I was down 1 lb and the light came on.

I put my summers on too early in April this year. I took them off and put my winter winter wheels back on for another month and the warning light didn't come on.

Makes me wonder if the car is smart enough to have two sets of sensors programmed.

I run the sensors in my summers.
Much more $ tied up in summers, so I want to know right away if one is running low.

I'm debating if I should get it from them. I asked for pics/selection for alloys but he has yet to respond.
