moving to Calgary , opinions?

hi guys i lived in montreal and since late 2007 i have been in Toronto. i am seriously thinking of moving there for cheaper education and better job opportunities.

here's my case, im in finance however too much competition here in toronto does not let me in jobs i want to since every job i apply i have to compete with 1,000 people. want to do my mba as well, uft/york is around 75-80k, i earn no where close to pay-off these unless i assume a huge line of credit (bear in mind prime rate will be in rise soon mid this year) for students. i have some friends moved there (mostly engineeers) and they seem to like and advertise calgary as much as possible.i also looked at university of calgary mba program seems reasonable (11k a year)i am thinkign of doing my mba and work at a job which i can relate to finance at the same time with minimum financing for my education.

my question is from big cities like montreal and toronto a single guy like me do u think i would do well? what are the pros and cons, anyone have tried this before? i am a social person and likes to go out a lot i do like toronto a lot. but jobwise with the unemployment and everything would it a better option for me to move there ??

thanks in advance.

I would say there's a fair bit of financial work that goes on out here, but that's not my bit so I can't say whether the job market is good or bad. You'd have to look into how well-regarded the Haskayne (U of Calgary) MBA is; a quick look tells me the U of Alberta one in Edmonton might be better. That said, you can take a Queens MBA while living in Calgary.

Things do seem to be picking up out here, and I think you might be surprised at how cosmopolitan this Cowtown can be. With over a million people now, we're not exactly small potatoes, even compared with Montreal and TO. Several financial houses have moved their HQs here in the past decade or so.

Can't comment on the single life, haven't been in the game for a couple decades (and wasn't much good at it when I was, LOL!)

Other opinions?
