Bought a Niftyshifty Boot!......

Now how the hell do I take off my shifter cause I tried and I failed

I found a link on a 350Z site with step by step instructions and pics, I just tried and ruined my shift **** lucky I bought a new one.

If anyone has done this please help me out I fear if i do it I'll ruin more than just the ****, I know if you turn the shifter stem too much you can damage the tranny so me doing it is no longer an option I need someone who has done this before NOT someone who thinks they know how to do it believe me I tried and I'm not trying again.

I'm from Cambridge but don't mind driving to the GTA

Bummer, hope you can get some experienced help. Curious to see that boot on. I seriously considered ordering one but since I changed to the Momo my AT shifter is quite a bit shorter (no comments!) so it would probably not look right with a boot.

i actually made my own shift boot and installed the small ball nismo shifter, there is instructions on the internet but i lost the link that i used. What kind drivetrain auto or standard.

If I remember correctly.

unscrew shift ****, don't worry the only thing that should move is the **** when turning. its a pain to turn but it will.

pull gently on the trim around the boot. Be careful when it pops because it will have wires attached.

remove the shift boot from the little studs

and replace

Some of them are a real PITA Roy, they use Loctite on the threads.
You do have to be careful about twisting the shaft too much, it can damage the linkage.

On mine I got a piece of heavy rubber to protect it and used vise grips to hold it.
I also wrapped up the **** and used a small strap wrench to break it free.

I actually popped up the console. Got underneath the boot with channel locks on the shaft under the boot, squeezed really hard, and a friend twisted the **** off. Pita.!!

I used my hands and twisted the **** it was tough but it came. The shifter is bolted to the linkage its a beefy set up I think you would be very hard pressed to damage anything with you bare hands. As someone else stated if you are worried about the linkage, pop the boot up so the shifter is exposed and use a small pipe wrench/chanle lock/vise grip to hold the bottom of the shifter and if your **** is already wrecked put a small pipe wrench/chanel lock on it and twist away.

Yeah, I guess mine wasn't to bad, I didn't realize some are really stuck on there. I just twisted and pop, out it came :-)

Get someone to use a vicegrip to help hold on to the shaft while you grab the **** and unscrew it, like the other guys said nissan uses some loctite to help keep the **** on and sometimes its on REALLY tight man but once you get the **** off its pretty easy from there....good luck!

Glad you like the boot btw

Definitely pull the boot cover up if you want to be safe about not damaging the shaft/trans. Place some towels on the plastic faux aluminum so it won't be scratched by the tabs after it's up when spinning it off.

I used vice grips to hold the shaft and a large pipe wrench on the shifter **** (wrapped with a couple of old leather gloves). Mine easily came off because I had so much leverage.

does the rubber boot have to be unscrewed (4 screws) or do I just pull the rubberdown from the top? it seemed kinda hard to push it down from the shifter.

I don't recall unscrewing the rubber boot. Are you lifting up the faux aluminum console? If you do that you should easily see how to grip shaft and screw off ****.

On my '04 coupe mt the plastic aluminum console pulled straight up. You need to do it carefully to make sure not to bump something and scratch it. From there you can get vise grips on the shaft and then use something on the shifter **** to unscrew it. IIRC the boot just fits up inside the shifter a bit but I don't think you can just pull it down before **** is off. There is a factory service bulletin on here somewhere.

This isn't the one I wanted but it will do. It's for an '05+ with a little different console but should really help you.

RBull THANKS!!!! that's pretty much like my setup. I had everything out and vice grips on and it still didn't work I guess I'll just have to just keep on trying the thing is its the rubber boot then right after that its the plastic ring held by the zip tie.....I don't know like I said I'd rather someone show me than me do it but I'll eventualy muster up the courage to do this.
