looking for nice double din head unit
My ac and radio died about a month ago and just got the jdm double din kit in the mail yesterday. Now I'm looking for a good head unit, so far I've been leaning towards the avic x920bt, the lowest price I found online was 779 us with wiring harness and attenna adaptor. I am keeping my stock speakers and bose amp. You guys think this is a good deal ?. Are there any places I should check in the gta for better deals or good install guys who know there way around our g35's. Any input would be great thanks guys.
Seems like a solid buy- I'm in Alberta so I can't say much about pricing in relation to where you've looked... One thing I just HAVE to say though- my life changed when I upgraded the stock speakers. You REALLY ought to give it some thought!
I ran with the z110bt... I think it's more expensive- but I took a few minutes to look up the X920 that you're getting and it sounds like a solid buy. I haven't been too impressed with the Pioneer nav- unless you actually input an address then it's really slick. The maps are REALLY out of date, mind you- I got taken for a ride around Edmonton when I could have taken a through road that's been in place for 3 years!
And they don't have much product support for it... I can't download updates from their website... I have to order a DVD?! C'mon... welcome to the 1990s.
So a solid choice... but really- in order to REALLY appreciate the upgrade you'll need to move away from those stock cones.
Good luck!

the nav is ok i just need a map and general direction, but im wondering if i should buy online and try to install myself or buy from a local shop and have them install? the only problem is that i dont know of any shops that deal with our cars for audio stuff. and i just spent 350 on the jdm dd kit dont want somebody to be lazy and screw it all up
ITNKICN - whats up with the stock Bose Speakers, I installed the AVH 4200, and I don't get it the sound sucks on the bose speakers. Are the speakers crappy, or the bose amp just not good, I was looking into what I should do. I would upgrade the speakers if they fit in the same spot as the speakers and the bose sub and amp if it fits in the same location as the current bose and amp. Do you know why the bose speaker sound sucks after a DD
the speakers suck (bose system) after a DD install because the signals that the stock amp is expecting would be different coming from a different deck other than the stock unit. you need something like a PAC ROEM NIS2 if you're going to use the stock bose amp with
aftermarket DD. I have the z110bt as well, used with PAC ROEM NIS2, and the sound is good with the stock bose system. Integrates very good too with ipod / iphone. Of course it would be better if the amp and the speakers were changed too. maybe sometime in the future.
The z110bt takes about 3 hours to install, and the guy who did mine knows his way around our cars. I have an '06 Sedan, and the place I went to is called LOCKDOWN, on mccowan and nugget. Look for Jeff or Christian.
Hope this helps and if you're interested with the z110bt, maybe i'll sell mine because i want to get a DD without navigation instead and buy a 200$ garmin so i can move it between cars.

I'll need to wait until I get home to let you know what speakers I got to upgrade...
The fact that the Bose speakers are actually manufactured by Clarion doesn't help. There's a thread in the tech Audio / visual forum (sticky) about speaker upgrades with stuck HU that covers a lot of the reasons (including those written above that seem pretty accurate) why the sound is so incomplete and flat.
I'm not home until Wednesday- I had a really great tech at a Visions do mine in Calgary. I'm not sure I'd let anyone else touch my car after he was done with it. Fantastic!
I need to do one more upgrade on those side speakers mounted in the back seat- if the upgrade is actually just to disconnect them entirely... we'll see. When I saw them- I could see why the sound was so tacky...
My upgrades included the tweeters in the door, the ones lower in the door, and the rear window ones. Those ones are a PAIN IN THE *** to get at because you pretty much have to take out the back seat, the side panels and the back deck to get at them- you can't just access them from the trunk.
What other guys have done- and an idea I looked at- was to take those speakers out completely and leave the screens in... then when you get a sub in the trunk, the sound travels unabbated through those speaker ports.
What has also worked fantastically for me is he put a vented sub box forward firing through the back seat- and as much as I thought it wouldn't work... WOW- disgusting!
The problem is- as he told me- in order to upgrade to the speakers I needed (wanted), I needed to go get an AMP. I got a 4 channel but I'm pretty sure a 2 channel would have sufficed. I wanted to be able to expand easily to a bigger sub (which I did later.)
Nice thing about the upgrades I did is it sounds incredible on the inside while not being offensive outside.
The dimensions on the speakers you need is in tech area as a sticky up at the top- Has the info I needed to make my upgrades. Hope this helps.

You should do the DDIN install yourself, save yourself a lot of money and know it'll be done right by doing it yourself.
I didn't think I could do it myself on my 03 sedan but the DIYs on this site are very comprehensive and with the help of a few friends was able to gut the entire car, lay dynamat, install an amp, replace all speakers and install the DDIN HU.

ITNKICN - thanks for that information, I do appreciate it, I was looking into upgrading the speakers and amp, I was a bit hesitant since it is bose but honestly the sound of the speakers is not as rich due to the bose system. Visions Calgary in NE did mine they did a good job on the installation, I am going to look into speakers and AMP for a good price, the DD already cost me up in the 1500.00, DD dash kit is expensive as well.
