All I can say is mine works flawlessly, and I would definitely get one again when the time comes.

That is so strange that yours is doing that, I would be upset too..
So this morning I turned off the traffic feature et voula: no ads. so it is tied in with traffic. (thanks Ian.)

So I unknowingly had that live traffic feature on, Wayne and got no traffic info.... Was I doing something wrong or do you have to subscribe to traffic to get it???

Wonder why I get ads and you don't????
Very strange: you get the traffic and no ads and I get only the pesky ads.

At the moment I don't need the traffic feature but I may somewhere down the road.

Have a good one mon ami,
Colin & Marg.

It gave me the alternate routes which was fantastic........with no ads or spam.

Glad to hear you got rid of it.

K & I wish you and Marg and all the furry kids a great Thanksgiving weekend. (I'll call you up later this week)
Thanks Wayne...I'll pass all the well wishes along...I look forward to chatting....

I'll have to check and see if something's amiss maybe with the traffic feature or maybe mine came 'equipped' differently than yours......
I'll see what the book says again and maybe fire off an email to G.

Have a good TG, and be sure to overeat ...... I'm sure all on 'Driver will and everyone here at home will too.....DOMO

We're here most evenings after 8.

Contacted Garmin about "eliminating" the ads and received this reply:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

The following are examples of when ads will popup on the screen:

* When stopped upon arriving at a destination.
* When on the main menu.
* Upon startup of the product.
* When viewing the traffic review page.
* When searching among certain POI categories.
* When on a map screen without an active route and IF the unit has been stationary at least 15 seconds AND no ad has been displayed in the previous 15 minutes.
* When on the map screen in an active route and IF the unit has been stationary at least 15 seconds AND no ad has been displayed in the previous 20 minutes AND if the unit is at least 20 minutes from the next maneuver.

If an ad is missed, it can be found by:

1. Selecting Tools.
2. Advertisements or Offers
3. Select the ad on the list.

If the advertisement feature is disabled, the traffic services will be disabled as well. This can be performed by:

1. Selecting Tools.
2. Settings.
3. Traffic.
4. Select the checkmark next to Enable Traffic to make it disappear. This will disable the advertising messages and traffic services.

I chuckled at :
"If an ad is missed, it can be found by...."

Apparantly, the ads can be turned off but one loses the live traffic feature. Pity.

Wayne, I reread the literature sent with my 1490T, logged into Garmin, registered, then downloaded the full Owner's Manual -- great reference material. Not sure why it didn't come with the 1490T. maybe an oversight????

I even connected the 1490T for existing updates and to find out when the unit actually displays traffic info:

First of all Lifetime traffic subscription is automatic and the unit's feature will activate automatically when in a covered area. Once the Traffic info button is selected in the menu it's good to go. (of course that's when the ads start)
But at least now I know why.

I'm now wondering why you don't have ads on your set. Could it be something you did or is it a different subscription/service somehow?
Strange isn't it.....
Have you done an update yet? If not, you may want to think about the possibility of unknowingly downloading the bothersome ad feature. FFT.

Anyone else up your way have a Garmin that may or may not have ads????

Cheers,
Colin.

^Only a guess but maybe the ads are purchased by geographic coverage.

Yes, the only thing that comes with the unit is the short start up instructions. Now I'm reluctant to do any updating or setting changes lest the advertising gods strike. I have no sympathy for them now that I left that career.

One other note about "traffic"

I don't recall the actual name of the setting, but there is a feature to auto re-route arround traffic.
Be very cautious with this feature!

I experienced this when I went to the US to pick up my car hoist.
It dumped me off route without realizing it.
I ended up on secondary roads with traffic that was worse than the main route. (it only does hiway traffic apparently)

Also, you can get dumped off into undesirable areas without knowing.

and there is no Advertisements or Offers Option on my unit I bought my 1490T when they first came out, is that why, or maybe it is because I live in an area where traffic is not covered (but it has not happened when I do get traffic updates in built-up areas)

I have it turned on in front of me right now, I am sure not complaining.
When you get up my way we will have to compare units.
I definitely won't be plugging my unit into the puter for updates.
Definitely TMI
...take it to PMs you 2

hahahahahahahaha........good one Wayne. That'll go down in history with the "body kit" for sure.......

Yes I'd like to see your 'unit'......and yeah you can look at mine......
when we meet up.

You're right Ian - that doesn't sound too good either.

Wayne, we need to look at each other's Garmin 1490T and take notes...
How's that?
Not much better is it......

Yeah you guys, Deane and Wayne: staying away from any updates might be quite prudent.

Wayne I still haven't had any icon showing that traffic info is in range. I'm wondering what shows.
I would probably need to be nearer T-dot to get any info anyway but just wondering what happens when you get some info.
It's not very explanatory in the o/manual.

Colin.

Hi Colin, when the traffic info comes on my Unit, er I mean Garmin, a small car in a green circle appears in the top left corner. The circle is green if traffic flow is good, it will turn yellow if it is just moderate but moving along pretty good, if the traffic is really heavy or stopped, this circle goes red (at this stage it could change you to an alternate route).
It does not work around my area only large centers that transmit the signal.

Ahh, the icon they mentioned appears in the top left...and changes colour and may reroute you. This 'reroute' was Ian's caution yesterday I believe. -- cool.
It doesn't appear to work around this area either (no car icon).....probably no signal, tho mine does show the 401 in red which must be a coincidence.

I'm sure the units compare similarly but with slightly different features.

That would a help too Ian. I'll watch for that when I finally get a traffic signal....

Thanks all for the help. I must say I've learned a little more about this 'unit'....

and on a side note: for those with units not so 'equipped' - I can get discounts/credits at Best Western and Olive Garden (so far.) should you be interested...

Cheers, it's been fun comparing..................... stuff
