Block Heater.. Is it worth it?

I have a block heater installed from factory. I'm thinking of actually using it this year.

I am not sure if there are any down sides to using the block heater other than the fact that my electrical bill will go up.

Will there be some sort of negative effect to my engine or coolant or etc?

You only need it for a couple of hours prior to starting and only when it's under -20. They're about 400 watts, so not a huge hit to your elec bill if used properly.

Power consumption goes up when you have 4 big *** diesel trucks plugged in at your shop.

You'll be fine.

If you park outside, get one. Simple.

Nice chance for me to jump in here... Our call volume actually goes up measurably during the winter because of block heaters. Big reasons are because of continued wear on the block heater cord from being crammed between the hood and the body of your car. Wear out the insulation- and suddenly things become more unpredictable. Easy to avoid, but happens because of absent mindedness.

Also, on that note- those of you who warm up their vehicles in the garage... suffice to say I'll punch anyone in the face for warming up their car while it's parked in the garage.

Just don't do it.

I checked my car this morning and I couldn't find a plug. I thought all cars in Canada came with a block heater?

it's an option. you will see a plug on the driver side grill if you have the option.

It's standard equipment for CDN cars. You may have to search for the wire and plug but it's there.
