Hey guys, just a heads up, the Battery Tender Plus is on sale at Crappy Tire starting this Friday. They are on sale for $49.95 and are regularly $69.95.

I have used Shumacher's version, but never this one because it's just to pricy. Both work well. The secret to keeping a battery for a long time is to NEVER let your voltage drop below 11.5 volts.

NP Sam. I got that one because of my research, Ian had recommended them a while back and they were on sale.

Still have the same one. They do a great job.
They really do extend battery life.

How is this compare to the MotoMaster Eliminator Intelligent Battery Charger, 2A, in terms of charging a car battery? http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/mo...-0111506p.html

The Eliminator is lighter, cheaper and has connection to 12v accessory plug. But I think the plug is not that useful as the G needs to be in the on position (engine not running) in order to charge battery. The LCD screen stays on in this case.

I want to wire the leads permanently to the battery. Is there a DIY on where to position the charge plug so that I don't have to open the hood every time?

The battery maintainer I purchased came with leads so you can hook them up permanently to the battery.

Yeah, but most of them are less than a foot long. You would still have to open the hood.

Same guts, different box.

Some are a bit more "intelligent" than others. Some can sense the battery chemistry and change the charge cycle to match.

True, but you can get a 25' extension to go from the battery directly from Battery Tender.

Yeah, but how want's 25' of cord coiled up on the grill.

What he's saying is the little plug with the ring terminals that comes with the charger (for perm install) is only 10-12" long. Because of the position of the battery, he must open the hood to hook it up. An extension cord wouldn't help there, you must splice the pigtail for the charger with enough wire that is hangs out of the grill so you can connect it without opening the hood. On most American car and trucks this is not a problem as the battery is usually at the front of the engine compartment.

Hey guys, I was hoping for a little more info on a battery maintainer.

I left my car at my parents' house while I live for a year temporarily on the East Coast. Since about mid July until now, my father has been turning on my car, letting it idle until warm, and then driving it up and down the driveway for 5-10 minutes max. Today, however, he said the car battery had died... evidently what he was doing wasn't keeping the battery charged enough.

I am more or less clueless about battery maintainers. Would one help me in this case? If not, what would be the best way to keep the battery from dying? The car is kept under a car port but it's basically outdoors. If this battery maintainer is the right move, would I be able to keep it attached with the hood closed?

Thanks for your help; I really appreciate it.
