So I offered to strip and refinish an old trunk. Got the paint off and it's mostly down to bare steel. Some black stuff still on, hard to get off. I'm wondering how much for to do a 33" x 18" x 14 steel trunk. Just looking for a ballpark figure before I call for quotes tomorrow.

It all depends on powdercoater. Prices vary a lot. When I got my my rims powder coated, I got quotes from 75 each to 200 each. Unique stuff like a trunk will require in person quotes most likely. He will have to determine how much prep is necessary.

We could throw out numbers all day, but all that really maters is what the guy doing the work quotes you.

Got quotes ranging from $130 to $200. Anyone got a suggestion on where else to go for a better price. Anyone on here who does this privately?

Good to know. It's more than I want to spend on an old trunk and I may just spray it with rust converter, primer and some navy blue high gloss. Spending too much time and energy on this for what it is and what it's use will be (substitute coffee table for daughter's apt.)

They sound like solid prices. Also check out the shop and products they put out. When I had my cush drive powder coated, I went with the cheapest guy I could find ($40) and I got about $40 worth of crap back. Can't strip the powder, so I eneded up throwing it away, buying used one off ebay and then paying a second shop $120 to do it correctly.

Second guy gave me a tour of his shop, showed me samples of his recent work, explained his process and has constantly done amazing work for me since. Powdercoating, engine work, and paint/body work are definitely areas where you do not want to cheap out.

Most powder coaters have various types of media blasting... they should be able
to quickly remove the rest of the paint for little or no cost as most of them want
to blast the surfaces to ensure good adhesion and smooth flow

You can get PC kits from Harbor Freight that work really well. I have used it to coat some metal parts black and it comes out really thick and shiny.

Update, got what appears to be a good job for $80 at a shop out in the country in small town. Daughter is very happy, got it clear coated (colour would have been same price).
