2005 6MT sedan - Steering wheel shimmy/vibration
Hi, I've had my 6mt sedan for a few months now and have 7k on it. What I have noticed since getting the new ride is that the steering wheel shimmies or vibrates noticebale when cruising between 100 - 120 k or under hard acceleration.
I've had the wheels balanced 3 or 4 times now and the brakes have been inspected and there is no rubbing. Alignment is fine coz it drives straight as an arrow.
Could it be that the sport suspension just translates more road feel through the steering wheel? Would that be enough to make the wheel vibrate noticeably? Do any other 05 6mt sedans have the same issue?
Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks

If you haven't already you may want to post in the sedan forum to broaden your reach.
Good luck.

Well, it was the dealership that actually did the balancing and they have a pretty good rep on this board, so I assume that they used the proper method of doing the balancing.
Tires were fine as well; apparently no belts have shifted.
The vibration occurs with both my winter rims/tires and summers. I got the car Feb 1 and switched to winters immediately and the shimmy was there. When I swtiched back to summers 3 weeks ago, same thing.
Not sure I heard about the TSB to the steering box. Any links to it? The only link I have to G maintenance recalss is:

Not sure if this is even related or a separate issue. My car seems to be twitchy at speed. I assumed it was the low profile tires and/or sport suspension. The car drives dead straight so it's not alignment but I find it does need a lot of correective action when the road gets a little bumpy.

Welcome to the world of owning a sport coupe or sport sedan. It's just very responsive to both driver and road input. No sweat.

What does "responsive" and "twitchy" mean though? If you release the steering wheel whil driving and you see it moving up and down, is that supposed to be expected behaviour?
I can understand feeling the road input through the steering wheel but I don't think it should extend to seeing the the steering wheel vibrate...

What you are describing as your problem would not be the same thing as being either responsive or twitchy. Vibrating or shimmying steering wheel under acceleration or at highway speed suggests some type of problem that needs further diagnosis. That definitely is not normal. Since it does this with either set of tires that likely eliminates that source although it is possible one defective/unbalanced wheel or tire from each set is the cause. What does the dealer say about it since you were having the problem after balancing and trying both sets of wheels? I would park it there until they determine the cause while you drive their loaner vehicle.
Good luck.

The understeer is greatly reduced, & much more neutral now.
It's almost like you just have to think turn & the car reacts....I just love the change.

Where did the 350evo come from and is that an ok mod on otherwise stock suspension?
