very poor gas mileage

I have had my sedan 6MT since early June '05. Have close to 5000km on it. Gas mileage appears to be getting worse....filling up with about 65L gives me 350-400 km/tank...about 16.25L/100km. I am not driving it hard at all, am doing city driving and am using 89 or 91 octane (I haven't found a difference). I reset my ECU but this did nothing for mileage or anything else. Will be taking it in soon for 1st check-up....what should I ask them to check with regards to this?

Thanks all.

That does seem low. I drive in traffic almost all week, drive my G fairly hard, and get about 525 km/tank.

I would bring it to the dealer and let them know. I don't know how they would test it out though.

Ya, that's lower than mine too. I'm driving an AT, though. I get 600km to a tank almost religiously. That's ~75% downtown Toronto / 25% QEW, which is a lot like downtown Toronto. :P

I always use 91 octane, though.

Edit to answer:

what should I ask them to check with regards to this?
Well it's an oil change, so you know the new oil should be good. Ask about synthetic oil, if they're not using it find out when they will be.

Make sure your tire pressure is good. A lot of folks report worse mileage with pressure too high/too low. You'll get a better ride with the right pressure, too.

And, less likely, make sure the air filter is clean. My air filter got bogged in my old Jetta and I was getting terrible mileage. You can even check this yourself.

There are quite a few things that can contribute to bad gas mileage that you can't control too. Altitude, ambient temperature, lots of uphill driving, etc...

Yup same here, just over 400 per tank. Not close to 500. I would say 90% city & 10% highway driving.

Yikes, that's aweful, kjo, ....When you take it in, they should be able to remap the ECU for better mileage.

Good luck with your ride, and welcome to G35Driver.
You in the East or West?

Colin.

I am always under 500km on a tank and I do a good mix 50/50 city-highway. I must admit though, my highway is always up around 130-140 kph. My previous vehicle 2002 Altima 3.5 SE had better mileage (trip computer always read 10.2-10.4 liters/100). I was expecting better mileage with the G as it's a 6MT vs. the Altima which was automatic.

the only way i'll get over 500km on a tank is if i drive it on the hwy. i average my consumption at 14-15l/100. i've only got a couple thousand clicks more than u. sounds about normal to me as my car was also terrible on gas for the first 5000 clicks. i also do my majority of driving around town.

It depends how you drive, if you always drive at higher rpm, then u are burning gas quicker.

I have no problem with a gas milage and I get an average of 550 km on a tank.

My gas mileage has been virtually the same since I bought the car (new) a year ago. I've read on this site that gas mileage is supposed to improve as the car breaks in, but I haven't experienced that. I now have about 8,000 km on it. The gas mileage has always ranged between 14 and 17 litres/100 km (and has been as high as 20 litres/100 km at one point in the winter when it was very cold - ouch!). I use premium gas as the manual recommends. Most of the time I don't drive the car hard, but I do drive 99% city and especially during heavy rush hour traffic (downtown Toronto). I knew about the bad mileage before I bought the car (and bought it despite that) but still that's a lot of gas!

I'm in the same ballpark as you or even less and generally drive very easy. Usual shift points are 2500 or less and easy on the throttle too. I run synthetic in the engine, trans and rear end also. I've never reset my ECU.
My best city mileage was my first tank and strangely it got worse from there!
If you find out anything wrong post up so we can check it out here too.
Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I was away on holiday and drove the TransCanada from Calgary to Kelowna....average speed about 140 kmh, and got about 650 km/tank. Can't complain, considering the heavy duty mountain driving. Smooth as silk at that speed and great handling. I will be taking my car in over the next week or so and will post any explanations I get from the dealership.

Gsedanman........I'm in the west. Thanks for the welcome.

650km a tank is actually really good, especially considering you probably took trans canada, which can be steep in some parts to say the least.

Love that area, btw. I was just in Invermere for a wedding, it's beautiful there!
