Nah, no blog...but here's the story - I started looking around late last year when I decided that I wanted a track car. I was looking for a light rwd fixed roof car and I've always liked RX7s since the first gen so the rotary route was inevitable. Reliability was also a concern which steered me away from going with a Turbo-II or an FD (sexy as it is, it was also above my budget) - atmospheric rotaries are are very reliable when treated well. I ended up going with an 86-88 model since they're 200lbs lighter, come with an LSD, and easier to keep street legal thanks to no e-testing!
It just so happened that when I posted on rx7club.com that I was looking for an FC, a guy whose FC I've admired at autocrosses PMed me and mentioned he was thinking of selling since he was moving on to a new project. I took a look at the car, and when I talked a little more with the previous owner, I knew that this would be a good purchase.
He's had the car since 1990 (never winter driven) and gave me a complete log of everything that's been done to the car. I have receipts dating right to 1990 and several pages of dates and modifications to the car. Every modification was a well thought out one, and he even kept ALL the corresponding stock parts. The real clincher was the fact that every single hose, belt, master/slave cylinders have all been replaced in the last year which means that I wouldn't have to worry about any typical repairs of an older car - only 159000kms on the chassis too.
In a nutshell, the current modifications are the streetported motor with 4000kms on it, racing beat header, high-flow cat, cat-back exhaust, SAFC fuel computer - good for 177hp to the wheels; all the suspension bits are almost new as well - shocks, springs, poly bushings.
I almost feel bad for buying the car...it's very clear that the previous owner loved it but he moved on to a 10th anniversary Miata and didn't have the room for both. He told me that if I ever move on to another project, he'd like me to keep him in mind in case he's in a position to buy it back.
I still love the G, but it's strange that this is the most excited I've ever been about a car.
