Side mirror paint fading!?!?

My girlfriends G35 coupe is an 04 purchased at the end of 04. When she bought it, she had the protection package for the paint put on. It is now half way through 06 and 35K miles later and the paint on the top of the side mirrors has faded like the car is 15 years old. I assumed the dealership would take care of it...I don't know if all Infiniti dealers are the same but the one we go to does not have an in house shop that can take care of it. They suggested going to a paint shop and having them look at it. Shouldn't this be something that the dealer should handle. I shouldn't have to come out of pocket any money for this because the car is still under all warranties. There should be some kind of warranty for the paint correct?...except for regular wear and tear like paint chips. But fading?!?! Has anyone else run into this problem? I don't think it matters but the color is red.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Eric

The paint is oxidizing; why? Because unlike the rest of the car the mirrors are single stage paint. You need to polish it to remove the oxidation, it would take a pro about 10 minutes. If you want to do it yourself go to pep boys or autozone etc and buy some Meguairs ScratchX and an applicator, use that and the mirrors should shine right up.

It's an issue on all red and black G35's. NXt is a chemical cleaner, so it will remove some of the oxidation. It's probably a good idea to do scratchx (remember, that will require some elbow grease) then put NXT over top.

Well we got hers new but we have never waxed it. Im not a big fan of wax because I am scared I will scratch the paint. We use the turtle wax car wash stuff though. Thanks I'll have to look at those products and see if we can take care of it.

On a similar note. How do you go about getting hard water stains off. It's not just water spots, its hard water that doesn't come off when drying the car. This is another reason we haven't waxed it. The hard water stains we be there forever if we did.

Thanks
Eric

Have the same problems on my red coupe. The passenger side mirrors paint is fading away. Tried waxing it but it didn't do crap. And I also have those hard water stains on the roof of my car that I can't seem to remove no matte how much I wash it.

You need a chemical cleaner or abrasive polish to remove those - try ScratchX on them too, it's a light abrasive and should do the trick.

Mix up a bucket of 50/50 white vinegar and water ... use a sponge or a microfiber to wipe over the water spots.

A trick I learned from these forums was using a light mist of QD on the still wet car before drying it off. Seems to help prevent streaking and helps the guzzler move along the paint while soaking the water off.

Also you could try a chemical polish like KAIO ... or if you want a slightly abrasive polish there are a million products out there but I definitely have had good experiences so far with Poorboys SSR1 and Clearkote Vanilla Moose Hand Glaze. On another forum people had good experiences with Clearkote Red Machine glaze with darker colors (reds and blacks) but they all tended to find better results using the RMG with a PC.

As pointed out earlier, since the mirrors are single stage, clean them up and wax or seal them.

put Megs Scratch X on a microfiber applicator and rubbed the mirror for a good 30 seconds 4 times per side, then 1 application of NXT per side and DDD Results are very nice, oxidzation is NO MORE!
