Learning as much as I can :)

1. After you wash the car and then clay bar it, it's not necessary to wash it again to remove any excess clay/lube if you're going to be polishing it, correct?

2. Will a fine/finishing polish remove very light swirls? Or is it pretty much guaranteed that I'll need to use something a little more abrasive than a fine polish, such as a medium cutting polish?

3. Lots of times I'll have bird crap or dead bugs on my car and I need to use bug & tar remover to get them off. Using a regular sponge or wash mitt usually isn't enough to remove it. I've been using a paper towel with the bug & tar remover.. Is this safe, or is there something else that I should be using to scrub it with?

4. Is it true that putting wax on bumpers could discolor the plastic over time, or is this guy that I work with full of crap?

5. Is there a particular chemical that some of you could recommend to clean stains on a convertible top, or is there no hope?

I wash a 3rd time but that's just me

I use Meguiars swirl remover for light scratches and swirls. For something deeper you can use your judgement wether to use a Coarser cutting pad on your PC or a more abbrasive liquid such as compound.

Never use paper towels on your car, what are you nuts?
I would use MF with Bug & Tar Remover maybe use a terry cloth depending on how much i had to take off like glue.

False

I would think a soft scrub with a heavy duty laundry detergent would work well in that situation but don't take my word for it

Hope that helps you out

1. I typically also put in an additional wash. It does not take much time and can help remove and contaminants that might be around.

2. Fine scratches may be removed or reduced with certain light polishes. I would start with a light polish and see what it does for you and then see if you want to go up a step.

3. I would avoid the paper towel due to the coarse texture. I usually presoak these spots and then clean them with a microfiber.

4. The guy who told you this about bumpers was probably referring to rubber bumpers (the ones that look like Rubbermaid stuff) and wax can discolor that type of plastic. On painted bumpers, you will not have a problem.

5. I have had good luck lately with the 303 convertible top cleaning product. It does need to be followed up with a conditioner though.

WOW, this is so true. I was in Montreal over the past few days.. the ride home was about 6 hours. I had SO many bugs on my front bumper it was insane (I'll post a pic later). Anyway, I soaked the entire bumper with bug & tar remover, but I let it soak for about 5 minutes this time and then just went over it my wash mitt and it wiped it clean 100%. Normally I have to put in lots of effort scrubbing because I never let it pre-soak in the past.. like a noob.
