regardless probably use something like a very mild abrasive (ScratchX)
on a cotton pad.

I kept getting the same thing and finally figured what was happening. In my case, it was the seat belt hitting against the door. I'm so short I have the seat up in such a way the belt hits when I exit. I tried a million things and just gave up and bought a new trim piece. It pops off easily and installs quickly.
