compounding a black car with porter cable? safe>?

hey,
ok wel i got my porter cable, i used a orange cutting pad and some optimum polish.

the polish took all the swirls and buff marks out of my whole car , made it look new.

however, my rear bumber came out bad.. i polished it like 4 times and it came out ok but i still have some swirl lines. i took out most of the swirs and all the holograms but i still see some circular scratches when i shine the car at night.

these scratches are in the clear coat, not the paint. i wanted to use some compound with my pc on my rear bumber, but i am scared to mess up the paint.

every time u use compound on a black car it leaves terrible swirls and dulls the paint,

if i use my pc7424 with optimum compound and follow with polish, can i damage my paint or dull it?

Are you using Optimum Polish or Optimum Compound?
The compound is more aggressive, esp with an orange pad. Try changing to a less agressive pad( yellow then white).

I'm thinking that you might have to use a less aggressive polish in order to finish the clear coat back to a glossy shine. Maybe a product like Poorboys SSR line would help you out.

Don't forget to let the product "break down"( around 3 to 5 minutes of polishing per area).

Have you looked at AutoGeek or Autotopia for further help?

A 7424 should not harm the paint in any way when used correctly. Just be careful when doing the edges fo the bumper, the paint tends to be thinner there.

Good luck!!

Could you post up some pics of the problems?

thanks for the info, maybe i just didnt use the polish long enough. the optimum polish took most of my swirls out but im left with some minor circular scratches. i will try polishing one more time, for longer intervals and see if that works. if not then ill use the compound

Its either you didn't break the polish down enough, for OP it takes up to 10 mins per panel, or you are using too much, which makes it impossible to break down. Once the pad is primed, each 2x2 panel shouldn't need more than 1-2 dime sized drops. Another issue is the orange pad, if you have a light polishing pad, try the OP with that and see if it gets rid of the hazing
