Why you should remove your tags from Microfiber Towels

Hey gang, I did a writeup recently on the importance of removing your tags when using microfiber towels on your paint. It utilizes the CD test which simulates what it would look like if used on your clear coat.

The left side of the red line shows when you only touch the microfiber part of the towel on the CD, the right side is when you use the same pressure but with the tag of the microfiber.

Read the complete writeup here to find out how to minimize adding these scratches to your clear coat, which takes away from the overall finish of your vehicle.

HAHA - you'd think so but you'd be surprised. A lot of times we get caught up in the other details (no pun intended) and overlook some of the obvious things.

I plan on doing a complete series of these write ups so if anyone has any topics or tests or anything else they'd like to see covered, let me know!

GC - thank you again for the kind words, its a pleasure to be on G35, I love the enthusiasm and great group of members!

great write up George, removing tags is one of the first things i do as soon as i buy a towel. that was the first thing i did when i purchased my waffle weave microfiber towel this weekend and might i say that thing is amazing. it saved me so much time as opposed to drying with normal blue microfiber towels. I also got a chance to use the IP and final polish on one panel of my car. Results were good, needs more work, but my arm was shot lol. it went numb after a while so i didnt have a chance to do my whole car.

George, good information, but wouldn't you agree that most of the higher quality MF towels do not include any tags to begin with?

I have had good experience with MF towels from PAKSHAK and Detailing Dynamics.

Thanks for the feedback Queenskid24. I'm a big fan of the waffle weaves myself. I'm glad you were getting good results with the products you selected, I can't say I didn't warn you it would be an arm sore

Many of our customers invest in the Porter Cable soon after they perform a complete detail by hand just because they know how much time and energy they would save next time around, and best of all, even better results!

Keep up the work, it'll be worth it, then post some pics when you are done!

As a general statement, I disagree. I get samples all the time from different Microfiber distributors and I've seen a good amount of tagless towels that I would never consider offering to our customers. The Microfiber industry is growing so strongly right now, I feel as if there often is less emphasis on quality and durability with a lot of towels. I've even read horror stories online where people have found needles still woven into the towels, try putting that on your paint!

Pakshak towels are certainly known for their quality, they are a great towel no question about it. I have yet to try the DD towels, but I'm sure they are good as well.

Most of our customers say that our towels are on par if not better than some of the pricier tagless ones. If you read the complete write up you'll see a review from Kevin (picus) who just got another batch of towels from us and his comments on our towels - DI Towel Review

It's true that all microfiber towels are not created equally. I am sure once I find a reliable MF distributor with an equal quality towel and is tagless, I will probably make the switch over. It can be a tough call because a lot of detailers have grown fond of our tagged towels and just rip them off like picus illustrated in his post.

My advice, if you find a towel you like, stick with it, because you can get burned on some (usually cheaper) towels... and if there's a tag on there, take it off!

Doh! I remember you said that, sorry! I didn't mean to bring it up again.

Snap any pics of your hard work?
