Its the carpets.
New car smell usually because its the new carpets and the smell of the carpet makes it sense to be new.

there are several things that give the car that unique smell, but a large part of it comes from the PVC (polyvinyl chloride) material used throughout the car...

New car smell is from the off-gassing of things like the plastics, adhesives, etc. It'll fade after a while. As mentioned, it may not be the healthiest thing for you.

But then, I'm not sure if there are any studies linking higher cancer rates to those that change cars every year!

this is an interesting topic. on my mkiv, i still get the new smell after almost 3 years. like on the back seats (cloth seats) where rarely anyone sits, the 'new car smell' still there. i think the smell gets more noticable if you rub or scratch the seats. scratch and sniff

i use Griot's LeatherCare for the seats and that brings up a nice fresh
"new" scent.

Well put, this is why it is nearly impossible to duplicate the new car smell.
