I've heard that claybar works for this.

Anyone else know for sure?

WD40 works but paint thinner works better but you need to clean the surface off and rewax the area ASAP.

i'd definitely try claybar. it worked for me. and safe for the paint if you use adequate lubricant. i picked up some mother's clay bar for 16 bucks at autozone (if you don't have zaino's). includes the lubricant and a small bottle of wax.

Do Not use lacquer thinner.......you will be repainting your car!!
mineral spirits or turpentine will remove any tar/sap etc.

Lacquer thinner is used in the process of painting your car and will desolve the clear coat and make a real nice mess!

Try a medium duty clay bar, but do be careful.......it could scratch the surface of the paint if you scrub too hard and some grit gets onto the clay. Do not use paint thinner or laquer as it will remove paint immediately..........you may not see it, but it easily removes the clearcoat or the upper layer of UV protectant.

Tree sap, when on the paint for hours w/ the sun baking it can be permanently etched into the paint, which means it's not removable even by high speed polishing w/ a heavy polishing compound.

91% Rubbing Alcohol, that's all you need, doesn't hurt the paint or anything, works great, I've been using that to remove tree sap for some time now, I'd do it as part of a wax job!

GR8TG35, really, lacquer thinner will do that, I thought it would only do it to new paint, hmmmm, I've used it before to remove overspray, never seemed to do anything, but that was before clearcoat!

I think your alot safer with lacquer thinner with enamel paints...since its a harder finish when cured....lacquer paints w/ clear coats on the other hand use more thinners in the painting process....the surface therefore is much more susceptible to etching when using lacquer thinner on its surface.

I am, however, talking about body shop lacquer thinner....I don't know for sure if they are actually available in different strengths....from my days hanging out with a body shop quy...it was always a no no to go around any work in progress with any type of lacquer thinner.....

I found out the hard way, I restored a 1967 corvette which was "silver pearl" color....it was a two stage paint. I inadvertently spilled a few drops of the thinner on the drivers door when I was cleaning the area for the door weather stripping....I didn't notice it at the time...later on I could see the drip runs down the door panel that were etched in to the clear coat.....I was so pissed!!!

To make a long story short....I'm not an expert in this field...but my experiences with it tell me the farther you stay away from your paint with it.....the better off you'll be....use mineral spirits or turpentine or polishing compound(extra fine) or the newest technology....The clay bar...thanks for hearing me out!2old4this

Well, that makes sense on fresh paint, like I said I had several occaisions where I got a car back after some body work, and had overspray on another older area, and it removed the fresh overspray! You are right though, that kind of stuff is something you should avoid using on any paint, you never know, BTW, I'm not an expert either, LOL!, just old!

Good one GR8TG35! But seriously the alcohol works great for tree sap, I first tried it just on a "guess" I was amazed how quickly it removed the tree sap, and it's cheap!! LOL!

Re: tree sap on my G what do I do?

Just faced this today, so I thought I'd pass it along. It's 33 degrees F, maple tree just dripped sap on the roof this aft. I used 100% (no dilution) Zaino car wash (they recommend this on the bottle for sap, tar, and bugs) which I rubbed on by hand on the sap, then gently scrubbed with a wet scrub mitt (one side mesh material). Actually I figure it would have come off with just a regular dish cloth. Stuff came off no probs, no impact whatsoever on the finish.

What kind of maple do you have? We have silver maples around here, had one in our yard, the sap from that just washed off, never had to use anything but water on that, what is hard here is the sap from a cottonwood, those little "nuts" they drop in the spring, leave a very hard sap spot!
