Help!! I need a new bumper
Help!! I need a new bumper
Yesterday I backed into another car and messed up my back bumper. Its not too badly scratched but it's pushed in really far and I'm not sure where to go from here...Should I try and get the dent out or is it possible to just get an entire new back bumper? I have 250 insurancedeductable so any advice on this I'd really appreciate.

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
Hey thanks for the info -- if I get a new one, will it match perfectly still? My friend told me that it might not look the same. $715 fine with me, my insurance SHOULD pay for it with my deductable...I think...I hope...
Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
I got hit in my rear bumper when car was 3 days old. Didn't have time to fix. Week later, got hit again! The cost was $750 complete. Can't tell it was ever replaced. My coupe is black.
Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
First, your premiums would be lower if you had a higher deductible. Get a $500 deductible. The Insurance Information Institute says increasing your deductible from $250 to $500 can save you up to 20 percent on comprehensive and collision coverage. Increasing your deductible from $100 to $1000 can cut some peoples premiums in half.
Second, report as little as possible to your insurance company. Youre crazy to report a piddly $750 bumper mishap to them. This will increase the likelihood of higher premiums for you. The more insurance claims a person files, and the lower deductible they have, the higher their premiums will be.
Lastly, don't rely on your mirrors when backing up. Physically turn your head to check whats behind you.

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
I got an estimate from a dealer in the Bay Area for $950 paint and new rear bumper. But I got two estimates for independant guys to just pop out the bumper dent. One guy would pop and paint for $350. I went with the guy who just popped the dent and that was $150. It looks okay, not really noticeable and I live in the city so my bumper gets messed up weekly.

Ok thanks guys. Yeah i have no insurance claims ever in my life. So i'm not sure if they'll raise my rates or not. I dont plan on any more after this - I'm a really decent driver i've never had anything like this happen before...*still smacking head*
Good lookin out Elvis with the Premium info. I'll definitely look into that.
rrowen -- did you have your dealer get that part for you or did you just take it to a body shop? I'm thinkin i'll call the dealer and see what they can do for me...
Thanks again...

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
Kid, don't report this one to your insurance company. You're only gonna save, what, $500? And then its a strike against you on your insurance. You say you don't plan any more, but that's why they're called accidents! Don't report it.
Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
NEVER ADMIT ANYTHING!!! If anything lie and say someone hit you. Other than that don't report it.

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
I work for a major insurance company. Changing your collision deductible from 250 to 500, or even 1000 is a good idea. There is a big difference in premiums there. On the other hand, everyone should change their comprehensive deductible to $50. The change in premium is VERY small. I used to have a $250 comp deductible, and was shocked to learn that going with a $50 deductible is only like $3 more a month. Doesn't work that way with collision, just comp.

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
Why does he need to lie? Did you know that lying to an Insurance Company is fraud? We all pay a few hundred dollars a year due to fraud. Most people dont have deductibles less than $1000 on "luxury cars"

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
Since it was not my fault, I looked for & found the best/expensive body shop. I had the body shop order the bumper from an Infiniti dealership. I must admit, it took more than a week, but I had a rental car, which was paid for by the person who hit me insurance Co.
Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
Oh boo hoo..... I talking about NOT admiting blame, not lieing to the insurence company.
Besides is there such thing as an honest insurence company? BTW my deductible is 300!!!

Re: Help!! I need a new bumper
ok --- so here's the update:
i first decided with you all and did not report it to my insurance. i was just going to bite it and just get a new one at my cost. So then i decided well what if i can just start to try and fix it myself and if i screw it up -- fine, i'm gettin a new one anyway.
So I got this piece of advice from someone who said heat it up with a hair dryer and pour some water on it so it dont screw up wax and push HARD and SLOW on it. Well i wedged my hand up in there heated it up and VOILA it came back out. I couldn't believe it.So i got it near about 90-95% perfect. Even the stretch marks came back together almost unnoticeable unless you look for it...I have a little scuff on it, but i hear Meguires Cleaner Wax is good for that.
I actually looked at it last nite and had trouble finding the little dimple it still had. I' think i'm going to get somethin like a DING KING to finish it out..Hopefully that can help it out...but thanks guys for your help. I can breathe again.
