Porter-Cable 6" Random-Orbit Polisher

Has anyone used this product? I am interested in buying it and some more "reviews" on it would help. Also, any other orbital polisher that have been used and do a good job would be nice to know about.

Oh yeah, and prices for each please, so I have an idea of what to save up!

Re: Porter-Cable 6" Random-Orbit Polisher

I have one (pc7424) it will run you around $110 from harborfreight.com. you could also try lowes (pc7336). it's great, i've had one of those cheap $50 ones. the pc7424 was definitely a huge improvement.

if you decide to go w/ it, you'll probably end up spending more money on pads and chemicals. if you're really serious about it, take a look at the forums over at autopia.org and detailcity.com.

I have the 7424 and it is great. Got the pads from properautocare.com. They have a lot of info there.

I have the 7424 also and it works like a charm. It actually makes polishing your car fun instead of something to dread. Got mine from coastaltool also with the bonus.

We use Dewalt exclusively, but it's a lot more expensive..........just be careful when using high speed buffers..........if the porter cable has rpm adjustments, then keep it on the low side until you get familiar w/ buffing. The last thing you wanna do is burn the paint.

The first time I used my Porter-Cable, I forgot to turn off before lifting it off the paint. The polishing bonnet flew off like a frizbee and 20 yards out of my garage and into the street!

Gordgee,

Being a fellow "hoser", I was just wondering if you purchased your Porter-Cable in Canada? If so, where and the cost if possible?

Thanks,

Hey bro, Another 'hoser' here....... Last time I looked, Home Depot had them for a decent price. I believe CTC has them too.

Re: Porter-Cable 6" Random-Orbit Polisher

If your car is 3 months old, do not, I repeat, do not take it to a "professional detailer". They will use a direct drive buffer which can burn through paint, especially on the edges of your car where paint is thinnest. Many also use very aggressive cutting agents to grind your clearcoat down. They want to give you results so you'll be happy. Never mind they ground the hell out of your clearcoat.

Get a Porter Cable Random Orbit Polisher. Not anything else. Don't spend $50 on that crap at Wal-Mart. They don't do anything. I think I got mine from Coastal Tool, too.

Whoever said their bonnet was flying off their Porter Cable; what the hell are you using bonnets for? Get yourself a velcro backing plate and use foam pads like the big boys.

Once you get your Porter Cable, get some 3M FINE CUT RUBBING COMPOUND. This stuff has a decent enough bite that it will take out minor swirls. You will see a difference. You will be so proud of yourself. Follow immediately with your sealant/wax of choice. I would recommend Klasse and One Grand Blitz Wax.

Then when you're done, don't put the swirls back on. These are the ways people get swirls:

1) Automatic car washes. Touchless ones, too.
2) Improper washing method. Use the "Two Bucket" wash method.

Get a thick, plush cotton chenille mitt. The thicker the nap the more area debris can get lost in so it doesn't swirl your paint.

Two wash buckets. One with water, the other with soap and water. Use car wash soap only. Don't use any household soaps. Meguiar's Gold Class is cheap and easily found. I like P21s; it's the slickest I've found. Plus it smells like apples:-)

Sud your mitt in the soap/water combo bucket. Start at the top of the car. Go in back and forth motions, the way air travels over your car. The theory is that straight scratch marks are visible at a lesser number of angles than circular scratches.

Frequently dunk the mitt in the all water bucket. Work the mitt with your other hand to get all the dirt and debris out, then dunk it into the soap and water bucket, then back on the car.

Yeah, I know the foam pads are better, especially for polishing. I still use my supply of bonnets for removing the wax/polish which they seem to be reasonably good at.

Re: Porter-Cable 6" Random-Orbit Polisher

I hear all this talk about burning the paint so I was wondering what it looked like if the paint was burnt. Does it bubble or turn black?

Also, is it easy to burn the paint and how is this avoided? People say to go easy until you get the feel for buffing, but what exactly is going easy on it?

I have a black & decker random orbital and I was wondering how this was different from the Porter Cable orbital? Thanks for your help.
