Window tinting

Does anybody know if window tint would help to reduce heat?
It gets a little too hot when parked in the sun.

kosmo.. if you want to reduce heat.. get Huper Optik.. I got it..and its AMAZING for heat reduction.. you can't imagine how well it works. It is expensive tint though, and it might be tough to find a dealer in your area.

Yes, tint does reduce solar energy allowed to pass through your glass. However, how much heat reduction depends on which brand of tint you go w/ and how dark you go. Of course, the darker you go in general the better the heat reduction.

We carry Madico window films for the excellent heat reduction and clarity. The film offers 99% blockage of UV rays and comes w/ a lifetime warranty from bubbling, peeling, and fading. There are other films that you could consider: Solargard, Johnson, Llumar, Formula One (high-end Llumar film), and Huper (expensive film - costing $400 per install on average).

Re: Window tinting

I have a question concerning tinting. I had some work done to my car and had a TV tuner antennae installed on the rear window and a GPS antennae under the front dash. The installer told me that tinting is fine as long as I don't use a metallic based tint. That would block the reception of the antennas. Huper is a ceramic based tint right? That shouldn't interfere with reception should it? What other good tints are available that won't affect reception? Thanks.

Huberoptik will not interfere-- I'm not too sure of others. Anyone else?

Re: Window tinting

kosmo... although darker is usually better, that's not always true. The important factor is heat reflection, which is why metallic dye-free films have become so popular.

Also, a reflective windshield sun shade does wonders in reducing heat; you'd be surprised how much heat comes in thru your windshield.

Re: Window tinting

I used SolarGard Quantum and it is great for blockng heat (50% windshield, 28% fronts and 19% rears) However it does interfere with my TV Tuner and Scanner. It is metallic based.

HuperOptik, although hard to find, is a ceramic base (if I remember correctly) Do some research... most will post up their Glare and Heat indexes for comparion on their own products, just use it to compare across brands.

Cheers, ted

Re: Window tinting

Yes, metal based film will distort signal............but that's where the mis-conception comes in. Metallized film does not "block" signal........it only reduces signal strength. The darker you go w/ metallized tint, however, the greater the disruption to your signaling devices.

Huper's film will not disrupt reception bc it's ceramic based. This film, to us dealers, cost 5 times as much, compared to our Madico film, which is why $400-$500 per install is the norm.

Metallized film will offer you the best heat reduction next to ceramics. I personally have the Viper 791 paging system w/ remote start where the antenna is mounted to the front windshield, but have not noticed any signal disruption after I tinted the front windshield w/ Madico's Onyx Series Film @ 55%.

Re: Window tinting

One more question on tinting:

There's a lot of cars out there with those nasty looking bubbless all over their tint. The cars usually look old too. That means that tint was probably applied long time ago. Is there a way to make sure mine will not bubble in 15 years? (I'm planning to keep this nice and expensive car for a long time, since I can barely afford it).

Re: Window tinting

If it has bubbles, it was an inexperienced installer or the car owner did it themselves trying to save a few bucks. This is a pic from my 1991 Nissan Sentra GXE that I took this morning... No bubbles since day one.

Re: Window tinting

Yep, that's right. Those bubbles got there from the getgo 90% of the time. The rest came from poor grade film. I have not had any problems w/ Madico, Solargard, & Llumar. I'm currently only using Madico because of the clarity it provides.

Keep in mind that the film is only as good as the install. I could give the best tint to a poor tint installer and the job would come out looking like those old cars w/ bubbles you see on the street. It's really not a matter of the tint aging, but rather (generally speaking of course) those people who own those cars either can't afford to pay for a nice tint job or they're flat out cheap.

Occassionally, I have customers ask if I beat other shops' pricing on tint...............e.g. today someone came in w/ a $99 quote from two shops in the area. Need I say more. Pricing is GENERALLY a reflection of the quality of install. Shops that do poor jobs and charge a premium won't be around for long.

Re: Window tinting

Thank you gouys for all the replies, they have been helpful.

However, I have more questions (thats what forums are for, right?).

I live in CA. Am I right that local laws allow only 70% transparent front windows, no tint on the windshield and no limitations on rear windows?

In my car I don't have navigation, so should I be worried about metallised film? What I am concerned is that it may interfere with low tire pressure warning system (according to the manual) and possibility of "demetallising". Can someone explain what it is?

Am I also correct that from durability standpoint HuperOptik ceramic series seem to be the best?

Re: Window tinting

Yes, the front doors in CA is allowed @ 70% VLT. Windshield not allowed at all and the rears - no limit. As for metallized film affecting the low tire pressure warning system, I cannot answer this, but taking into consideration the proximity between the sensors and the module, it shouldn't affect it.

As for durability, Madico, Llumar, & Formula One is as good as Huper.
