Cleaning stock wheels?
Cleaning stock wheels?
I just picked up some Meguires Hot Wheels cleaner and attempted to clean my wheels. My main focus was the inside of the wheel where brake dust and road grime build up. I had the wheels off and followed the instructions, but the results were dissappointing. Some warm water and car wash produced basically the same effect. Can anyone suggest a better product or technique to get the wheels looking new again?
Thanks

Re: Cleaning stock wheels?
I wipe mine off every night. It takes about 10 minutes. Usually they dust off with a cloth and when it's really caked on I use some Mequires detail spray....they are painted and clearcoated, so treat them like you would the rest of the car. Once every couple of weeks I wax them which makes them easy to wipe.

Re: Cleaning stock wheels?
I usually try to wash the car once a week, but that's hard to do in the winter up north. So now the brake dust has been baked on and mother nature did her thing, what can I do? I would like to try a more aggressive product, but something that won't damage the wheel.
Somebody must have gone through this before. Where are the detailer gurus?
Thanks

I wash with soap/water once a week and use Klasse every couple months. Others swear by P21S gel; here are some related links: http://www.properautocare.com/propwheelcar.html

Re: Cleaning stock wheels?
The hot tire stuff works fine. Just rinse the rim(you dont need to take it off the car) with water, spray the stuff on, rinse, then dry. The tire will still be dirty when you dry, but all the grime wipes away real easy....much easier than with soap and water for me.

hot wheels worked ok for me too, just make it a regular ritual and they will come off with no scrubbing. The only thing is that it is acidic or something as it instanly starts to rust the rotors.

Soap & water with a soft sponge often and Z5 or Z2 once a month.

Thanks for the replies!
I'm not concerned with the ''face" of the wheel, but with the inner side that doesn't give you easy access. Its the part of the wheel that is hard to maintain that I have ignored. Looking for a stronger product that will not damage the wheel. I did use a brush with Hot Wheels, but maybe that's as good as it gets. How about PS21 or Eagle mag cleaner? Any comments?
Thanks

Re: Cleaning stock wheels?
I'm not too sure if the inside of the rim is clear coated, but if it isn't you may want to try any wheel cleaner w/a real fine grade steel wool pad, and rub very lightly to see if that will remove and residue/buildup......but please check to see if it has any finish on it....if it does, this will only add to the problem after you clean them up............exercise caution when messing with these $900 rims......

Re: Cleaning stock wheels?
I tried cleaning the inside of my rims once. They're just raw aluminum, not coated. I have little black pits in them that I just couldn't get out. You can't see them when the rims are on the car, so I just gave up.
I tried Eagle1 A2Z, Comet, Dawn, car wash soap, some organic cleaner stuff I have, Fantastik w/ Bleach, and probably a couple of other things lying around the house.
