Waxing for the first time...
Re: Waxing for the first time...
I had my car two months before my first wax. I washed it with dawn soap, clay-bar, and meguire's scratchX for tiny scratches. Then I used crystal guard.
The clay-bar actually picked up a lot of paint imperfections, considering my car is only 2 months old. Well worth the time if you love your car!

Re: Waxing for the first time...
On my Eclipse and my wife's M Roadster, I have never applied paste wax (that you buff off). I hate swirls with a passion, and have avoided them with my efforts. I use the pressure washer wax, and it's mediocre, but I'm selling my Eclipse, and the paint looks like brand new, other than a couple of parking lot infractions. My wife's car looks fantastic, too. Not one swirl. Now the wash, IMHO, plays a huge part. I never wash with a cloth, sponge, or any item other than my bare hands. That way, I can *feel* the dirt and grit, and don't spend time grinding it in to the paint. I just wet the car down, then put the hose nozzle on "mist" and wipe down with my hands and a bucket of soapy water (I use carwash fluid). Works like a champ. Just rinse the car 1/4 at a time, so you don't have to rewash. Wax when the car is cool or under shade, though. Waxing a hot car sucks big time (I've done it on previous cars).
Me failed English? That's unpossible!
