I have been wanting to clay and I have it ready and everything in my garage but just spent the day waxing it maybe 2 weeks ago.

If I clay the car will it strip the wax off? I'd like to give it a nice clean surface but if it means I need to re wax it, I'll just wait a month or two.

Yes it does remove the wax so you will have to rewax it afterwords.

Claybar is abrasive so the car needs to be rewaxed. Best to use clay when washing the car (Soap and water lubrication)

 

As everyone else said, it will strip the wax. However, it will make wax last longer because the wax can better attach itself to the contaminant free surface.

 

I did a quick clay bar when I first got the car but I am now realizing that I didn't do a quality job so I am going to do it again once this sealant starts to thin out.

 

You might want to consider using something to strip all of your protection off before you clay such as 50/50 alcohol and water or Menzerna Top Inspection Spray. This way you start fresh and will be sure that there is no leftover wax or sealant that might cause bonding problems when you go to reapply more protection after the clay. It might not be absolutely necessary but there are some products out there that will not bond with others and you end up getting little "fish eyes" in your protection layers where the product did not adhere correctly. It would be one extra step to do this but it doesn't take that long and will help ensure that all the other work you are doing looks as good as possible.

 

I usually wash with dawn or some kind of dish soap to strip the wax. Should I just use an alcohol mix?

Never heard of Menzerna's top inspection spray, I'll check that out.

 

I used the alcohol mix before I did my clay, polish, glaze, sealant, and wax. It worked very well. I could tell it got rid of everything because when I ran my hand across the paint it "squeaked" instead of just gliding over it like it did before using the alcohol. I knew the process I was going to do was going to be extremely time consuming so I wanted it to be right the first time. I went with the alcohol mix because it was cheaper than the Top Inspection Spray and I didn't have to wait for it to be shipped. Whatever products you get I really recommend Detailed Image.
