smoke/tint headlights

i am trying to smoke/tint the headlights with testor's transparent tint spray thing and clear coat....i am just wondering that what's the disadvantage of taking the housing out of the car and spray it, instead of just spraying it when it's on the car?...do people spray the INSIDE of the cover? because if people spray are spraying the outside then i don't see why i need to take it out

is there any alternative of getting smoked/tinted headlights? i've seen the overlays from bluebatmobile....but i don't exactly know if i can afford 38 dollars and more...
Edited by takuyaah on 08/22/04 02:01 PM.

Re: smoke/tint headlights

hum......well unless you want to buy another set of headlights i would do either one or two things.

1) buy the overlays
2) Get some other headlights and try taking them apart and do the blackout housing urself. I painted the silver piece and not that plastic piece. But thats just me. If you can afford a G why not buy overlays?

Just a thought

Re: smoke/tint headlights

thanks for the reply =) i guess you are right...

the only reason why i didn't want to follow thru with the blackout housing DIY is because it seemed complex and knowing myself i will probably mess up...so...thats not a good option...

i thought if i just cover the rest of the car and use the spray to spray on the headlights..it would be easy enough and i didn't know why people would need to take the whole thing down....

in my very very humble opinion..38+ dollars (for one part) is pretty expensive for a poor student like me....i want headlights and taillights and side markers...i mean..it can run up to over 100...while..if i do it myself (and pray i dun mess up)..its probably gonna cost me around 10 bucks..

i don't know...just trying to get some advice from you experienced people =) thank you....is there any overlays out there that are a bit cheaper?

i SOOOooo wish that the DIY on blacked out housing has a few pictures on them....=)

In my opinion, that tint spray never quite looks right. It would be a shame to ruin the looks of a 34K+ car with spray tint. Just buy the overlays, start with the headlights first. You don't have to buy them all at once!

The reason we take it apart is because we are specifically blacking out the chrome piece that is in the headlight housing. If you spray paint over the housing cover, light output from your headlights will be reduced. I definitely do not recommend simply spray painting your housing, it probably wont look good and you might end up with messed up headlights. The best option with the least amount of the work is getting the overlays. Good luck.

i see what you mean skye =) thanks so much, i was so confused..haha...

wait...so if spraying over will reduce light output...wouldn't doing an overlay have the same result?

Yes.
I remember there was a post talking about light output thru' the overlays. Or just wait for Bat to fly in here and answer that question =)
