SCRATCHES! HELP!

HELP! On top of worrying about what FRANCES was possibly going to do to SoFla, some ARSHOLE hit my rear bumper in a parking lot while I was stocking up for the hurricane. There are a lot of scratches (about 3 feet of the bumper has 1/2 inch long verticle scratches). On top of that, I noticed it as I was storing my G for the hurricane, nothing I could do. I could not tell if the bumper was creased, seeing that my garage is now packed with all my stuff that is normally on my patio. As I said, from the side view, I could see there are a lot of scratches. None of them look to have gone thru to the pastic, but some are deep. How do I get them out? I can usually get the scratches to go away, but I can never get the paint to become as glossy as the surrounding paint.

1) How do I remove the scratches?
2) What are some good techniques?
3) What products should I use?
4) What applicators should I use (foam/clothe)?
5) Should I leave it to an expert and take it to a body shop?
6) How much should it cost to have only the bumper buffed/compunded/polished (ie.what ever it take to get the scratches out)?

PLEASE HELP, my baby is laying mortally wounded, and I can't do anything to help her until this FRIGGIN' hurricane passes.

Re: SCRATCHES! HELP!

Sorry to hear about your car. I am also just sitting here in Orlando waiting for Frances to ruin my Labor Day weekend.

Without actually seeing the damage to your bumper, it sounds like you'll need a professional body shop to take care of the deep scratches. For light scratches, Meguiars Scratch X does a great job. You just use it with a soft cotton cloth.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

Be safe this weekend.

Re: SCRATCHES! HELP!

This should help: http://www.carcareonline.com/viewarticle.aspx?art=8
I'd also try Scratch-X first.

Worst case for rear bumper replacement or refinishing (coupe est here):
- replacing rear bumper cover assembly is $245.53 (part) + 2 hours labor to paint to match/install
- refinishing (vice replacing) same rear cover is 2.6 hrs labor
