V36 paint quality...

Hi All,

I picked up a 2008 G sedan a month ago knowing that it would need a respray of the hood due to a ton of rock chips\touch ups. However, after further review of the body while at the shop, I noticed some stains embedded into the paint. I asked the shop manager what it was and he stated that it was probably bird **** that baked on the car for while and ate through the clear. Out of all the cars I've owned I have never seen this. Sure enough, I had a bird crap on the side of the car earlier this week. Went to take it off and it already stained\embedded into the clear. Is this common with all car paints or is Nissan using inferior products on a supposedly "Luxury" car?

don't blame the nissan paint. that bird **** is really acid to any paints. the only way to avoid it is at the time you see any bird ****, spray some quick detailer on it and make sure it's gone ASAP.

Thanks for the reply.

After speaking to my detailing friends, they also said to pickup some quick detailer and keep it in the car with a microfiber towel. Done and done! Just went to Pep Boys and picked some QD up. I also picked up Scratch-X 2.0 to try to get this current etching out.

Niiiice.....

It's crazy that I've never seen it on any of my cars before. Even my wife's Volvo that gets bombed everytime she parks in front of our house. This is my first dark color car so maybe it shows more?

No, it's normal for dark cars, especially black. Black absorbs a ton of heat from the sun, and the heat acts as a catalyst for the acid in the bird bomb, causing it to etch into the paint. Scratch-x may improve the look but generally etching are pretty deep. Wax offers some protection, but Opti-coat is your best bet for preventing acid etching.

Put on sealant if you really want to protect the paint. I use poorboys sealant and it does wonders

Sealants do not provide that much protection against acid. The sealant molecularly cross-links with the paint, meaning the etching can transfer directly to the paint from the sealant. A wax on top would provide better protection as it only sits on top of the paint and provides a sacraficial layer.

Obviously the best protection is a sealant with a wax on top of it.

This is why i fuxing hate birds. Didn't know that sealants don't give much protection against bird crap. I've always used sealants hmm.. they last so much longer than wax lol.

The guys on Autopia.org constantly complain about the relative softness of black paint...I guess it is the additional heat generated as the poster above mentioned. I never leave it on my red car either.
