Question Tinting cause bad reception?

I just got the windows tinted on my wifes coupe. Now she is complaining about back reception. Has anyone else running into the same problem?

I haven't experienced that with my 35% tint. I even have my XM antenna mounted inside my backseat shelf.

Window tinting does not cause any interference with FM and/or Sat radio. I've always had window tinting on my cars, living in S. Florida without any radio issues.

it actially depends on the tint you get. if it has anything matalic in it. some tints have matalic properties. and since the g's antenna is in the window it may cause interferance. just depends n teh tint.

I have always had the "metallic" window tint (for the past 17 years I've lived in S. Florida) and never had a problem with any car which had the FM antenna in the rear window (or front windshield...I once had a car which had the FM antenna inside the front windshield and I had that front window tint strip on the windshield). Think about it this way...if the FM radio waves can penetrate the windows, walls, and roof of your house (which may have steel beams and trusses, and other things that definitely interfere with radio reception, then it can surely penetrate your car windows with metallic window tint without a problem.

Yes I have believe that my radio reception worsened after I had my windows tinted. The tint that I had put on is a silver-reflective tinting as apposed to the plain dark smoke. My G is silver and so I thought that the car would look better with the this type of tint. When I told the installer of my intentions, aside from him telling me that it would look good and reduce the rays more so than standard tint (sales), he even mentioned that I might affect my radio reception. I did some research and it can have an affect. I am in SoCal, where it is not just a big flat state, the mountains have made the radio reception hard enough as it is, and then the tint adds to the problem. Well I guess that is what the CD player is for aside. I just check traffic reports on line b4 I commute.

This is the reason why I went with a ceramic tint...I didn't want to take the chance of messing up my reception for either the satellite, radio, or GPS. Ceramic tint is a little more expensive than the metallic tints, but I think it's worth it. Also, I don't know if ceramic tint comes in that silver-reflective finish that you have.

There is a real possibility of metallized film affecting cell phone, navi, and other types of wireless reception. It does not mean, there will be total blockage of signal, but rather it being reduced. When going w/ a metallized film and a darker shade, the metal properties in the film is higher, which could then affect reception to a noticeable point. However, if you are using.....say 50% VLT film, the metals in it may not be sufficient to affect any type of signal.

There is also the more expensive choice to go w/ IR film (infra-red), which is a sputtered / layered film that offers excellent heat reduction, uv blockage and also no distortion in reception. From us dealers, the films costs 5-6 times the standard metallized film, but is not quite as clear as some of the high quality film manufacturers.........clarity is more noticeable to us dealers, perhaps, bc we have the trained eye to spot it.

Here are some good film manufacturers:

Madico, Formula One, Solargard, Llumar

IR films:
-Huper, V-Kool, Madico (will be released in March)
