I fixed some curb rash on Volk Winning wheel and I'm trying to polish the lip back to mirror finish. However, I'm getting lots of swirl marks that are visible against the light. The metal is so delicate that even the micro fiber towel is leaving swirl marks on it. Here is what I did:
all lubed with WD-40
220 grit
400 grit
800 grit
1500 grit
3000 grit
Mother's Mag and Aluminum polish
I made sure to sand along the rim in straight lines, then used the metal polish in the same manner with a microfiber cloth. The results were not great to be honest. At this point I added two additional steps, 5000grit and 7000grit and tried both Mother's and Semichrome. Results were a bit better, but still disappointing. Finally I used a drill with a flannelette polishing wheel, tried both Mother's and Semichrome. The frustrating part is that on the final step where I wipe off the excess metal polish I see micro scratches forming from a clean microfiber cloth. Is aluminum really that delicate?
I tried to get a decent picture of it, you can see the swirl where the flash is and it looks ok below the flash without light on it.
How do I get that flawless mirror finish? Would spraying some clear on it help with the swirls? Any help would be appreciated.
